Jerry Nelson, age 75, of Huron died Friday, July 25, 2014 at Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be 10:30 am Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at American Lutheran Church with burial at St. Martin Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be 6-8 pm Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron; or Wednesday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Jerry Lee Nelson was born on November 8, 1938 in Huron to Lionel and Olga (Johnson) Nelson. Jerry was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. He attended the Bender Country School in Carthage through the seventh grade. Jerry entered the SD Army National Guard in 1955 serving for over 6 years. He graduated from Huron High School in 1956. Jerry married JoAnne Brown on June 27, 1959 at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Huron. He worked for several years for George Conrad Construction as a heavy equipment operator. In 1963, Jerry started working for the South Dakota Department of Transportation. He mainly worked out of the Huron shop, except for a short stint in Miller, until he retired in 1994 after working 31 years. Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling the country, and could usually be found in his garage working on something. He loved spending time with his family, especially his two granddaughters. Jerry is survived by his wife of over 55 years, JoAnne Nelson of Huron; three sons, Ken Nelson of Plymouth, MN, Keith Nelson of Plymouth, MN, and Larry (Terri) Nelson of Minneapolis, MN; two granddaughters, Peggy and Nicole Nelson; one brother, Don Nelson of Huron; several nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Maxine (Bob) Biever; and one stillborn sister.
