Obituary

Jerome "Jerry" DesLauriers, age 76, of Huron, SD, died Monday, November 9, 2009, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

His funeral mass will be 1:00 p.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish followed by private burial at St. Martin Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m. and a Celebration of Life Service at 7 p.m.; or Friday afternoon one hour prior to the mass at the church.

Jerome Duane DesLauriers, son of Harvey and Mavyne (St. Peter) DesLauriers, was born on July 6, 1933, in Aberdeen, SD. The family was living on a farm near Raymond, SD, at the time of his birth. He grew up on the family farm, attended schools in Raymond, and graduated from Raymond High School.

On July 11, 1953, Jerry married Verla Hilmoe in Clark, SD. On October 1, 1954, they moved to Huron.

Jerry worked at Montgomery Wards until December of 1955, and on January 1, 1956, Jerry began working for Verschoor Chevrolet. He worked there until 1971 when Ralph Thomas purchased the business. In 1973, Jerry and Al Hawks purchased the business. Jerry sold his interest in the business to Hawks in 1980. Jerry then started DesLauriers Auto Sales on October 1, 1982, which he owned until selling the business to his son, Mark, in 1998. Although Jerry never officially retired, he actively enjoyed going down to the business everyday to work.

Baseball always was an important part of Jerrys life and he played for many years in the position of catcher. During his playing days he was a member of three South Dakota Amateur championship teams of 1956, 1957, and 1958 playing for the Huron Stahl Flyers. He then founded the Huron Indians baseball team and was player/manager for the team winning the 1960 South Dakota state championship - the only state championship won by a Huron baseball team. He was inducted into the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. He was a Vice President of the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame for many years. Jerry also enjoyed watching all sports.

He is survived by his wife, Verla of Huron; 2 sons, Dan (Diane) DesLauriers of Mitchell, and Mark (Staci) DesLauriers of Huron; 1 daughter, Cheryle (Gus) Marcus of Huron; 6 grandchildren, John Marcus, Brad Marcus, Linda DesLauriers, Martin DesLauriers, Jessica DesLauriers, and Michael DesLauriers; 2 sisters, Arlene Sutton of De Smet, and Pat Danforth of Watertown; 1 brother-in-law, John Solheim of Redfield; and 2 sisters-in-law, Erlene DesLauriers of Clark, and Wanda DesLauriers of Watertown.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, Robert, Marvin, Richard, and Glen; 1 sister, Vanetta Solheim; 2 sisters-in-law, Denise DesLauriers and Alice DesLauriers; and 2 brothers-in-law, Don Danforth, and Robert Sutton.
