Jerry Bales, age 87, of Huron, passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. His funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Monday, December 13, 2021 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Huron with burial at Riverside Cemetery in Huron. Visitation, with his family present, will be from 1-3 PM on Sunday, December 12, 2021 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron.

Jerry Lynn Bales was born June 4, 1934 in Huron, SD to Ralph and Gladys (McDaniel) Bales.  He graduated Huron High school in 1952.  He furthered his education at USD and Huron College.

He went on to work at Stockman's Auction Company, then established Bales Continental Commission Company with his father and brother Larry in 1960.  He owned and operated the business until he retired in 2002.  When he wasn't working, you could find him at the golf course.

He married Darlene VanTour in 1953 and had four children, Steve, Lori, Kim, and Rich.

In 1986 he married Maggie Baker/Timm, and to this marriage gained two more children, Stephanie and Ryan.

Jerry was an avid sports fan and accomplished athlete. He excelled in football, basketball and track.  He was inducted into the Huron High School Hall of Fame in 1996. In high school, his team won the state championship in track and he had 3 first place finishes in various events.

He loved his family and cherished spending time with them.

He is survived by his wife, Maggie of Huron; children, Steve Bales (Sandy) of Huron, Lori Bales-Pechholt (fiancé Dave Hein) of Huron, Kim Schnabel (Brad) of Huron, Rich Bales (Stephanie) of Lakeville, MN, Ryan Timm of Nashville, TN; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Gladys, brother Larry, daughter Stephanie (Bell) Bales, grandchildren, Travis Bales, and Jeremy Bales; and great-granddaughter Delaynee Schnabel.
