Obituary

Jean Ohm, age 83, of Huron died Saturday, October 15, 2011 at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron. Her memorial service will be 2:00 pm Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at American Lutheran Church in Huron with a private family burial of her cremated remains at a later date. Memorial visitation with her family present will be from 5-8 pm Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at the American Lutheran Church; or one hour prior to the service at the church. Jean's family prefers memorials be given to the Jan Manolis Family Safe Center in Huron. Jean Ruby was born to Myrtle (Stone) and J. Earl Ruby July 5, 1928 in Marietta, MN. She married Albert Ohm at Madison, MN on October 30, 1947. Jean had a lifetime of community involvement, from her work in the early 50s with Civil Defense and the Democrat party from Harry Truman on She served nine years as an officer of the National Federation of Democratic women, two of those years as the President. Jean was on the SD State fair board for 10 years, and served two years as the first woman president. She was active in her church, the Huron Arts Council, the Pyle House, Dakotaland Museum Board, Meyer-Thompson American Legion Auxiliary (served for over 50 years), Family Violence, and long standing member of the Heartland Saddle Award. Jean also owned and ran the Huron Collection Agency for 35 years. Jean lived in many towns between MN, ND and SD throughout her life, before settling down in Huron, SD. Her husband, Albert, died in 1977, and she sold "Virginias" and moved on to her little white house where she loved hosting family and friends, especially on Christmas Eve where her entire family would pack into her living room to enjoy the holiday together; this was not an easy feat with nearly 30 there most years. She always loved her family, especially her "grandbabies" and "great grandbabies", spending time with friends, enjoyed traveling and loved everything about Christmas. Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Randy (Eileen) Ohm of Huron and Kevin (Dori) Ohm of Brookings, and an almost daughter, Elizabeth (Jim) Mongeon of Rolette, ND; Grandchildren, Sara (Hank) Hainzinger of Ponca City, OK, Amber (Tyler) Peper of Brookings, SD, Jason (Kaycee) Ohm of Arthur, NE, Adam Ohm of Brookings, SD, Amanda (Ben) Quam of Brookings, SD, Tim (Kaylee) Ohm of Alva, Oklahoma, and Alex (Maureen) Ohm of Sioux Falls, SD. Jessica, Rebecca and Joseph Mongeon of Rolette, ND; great grandchildren, Sadie, Mary Lee, Henry Larkin, Emma, Laynee, Hadlee, Jaycee, Kodee, Isaak, Olivia and soon-to-be born Quinn; brothers, JB, Val, and Kay C Ruby, and sisters, Waneta Heaton, Leola (Punky) Willis, and Mary Beth Baukol; many nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert in 1977; her sister, Margaret Zahnow; and her great grandbaby, Corrigan Ohm. Words directly from Jean, "Celebrate my life - I did!
