Obituary

Jeanie Ann (Shanard) Beach was born to J. Harris and Martha (Findahl) Shanard on June 28, 1923, in Bridgewater, South Dakota. She was a proud graduate of the University of South Dakota; one of the highlights while attending USD was her four years as a Coyote cheerleader. In addition, Jean Ann loved being a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. After teaching for a couple of years, she moved to Chicago and worked for an employment agency. She met her future husband, Chandler Lewis Beach, on a blind date. They married on August 19, 1950 and settled in Huron after brief sojourns in Newport, Rhode Island and Albuquerque, New Mexico, while Chan served in the Adjutant General's office during the Korean conflict. Chan died in 1969 after 19 short years of marriage. Jean Ann enjoyed her associations with PEO Chapter F and with her book club. Jean Ann's health deteriorated, and she eventually moved to Prince of Peace retirement home in Sioux Falls, where she died on September 17, 2012, at the age of 89 years. Jean Ann loved her two kids, Martha (Walter) Carlson, Sioux Falls, and Bayard "Bucky"(Julie) Beach, Atlantic Mine, MI. She was crazy about her grandsons Jacob and Obadiah Brown-Beach, Seattle WA, and Bayard and Sam Carlson, Sioux Falls. It was very hard on Jean Ann when her two brothers, George and David Shanard, died earlier this year. Jean Ann's memorial service will be at 11:00 am on Friday, September 21, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church, Huron, with interment at Riverside Cemetery at 10:00 am. A reception will follow the memorial service at the Crossroads in Huron. Visitation, with family present, will occur from 6-8 pm on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron. Visit welterfuneralhome.com. Memorials may be made to Kappa Alpha Theta, Alpha Rho chapter, 725 E. Clark Street, Vermillion, SD 57069, or to a charity of your choice.
