Obituary

Janice Jo Mortimer, age 81, of Hitchcock, SD, died Monday, January 17, 2011, at Huron Regional Medical Center.

Her funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 21, at Huron Christian Church with burial at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Altoona Cemetery, rural Hitchcock. Coffee with family will follow at the Hitchcock American Legion Post served by the Ladies Auxiliary.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 p.m., with family present, at Huron Christian Church and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.; or Friday morning one hour prior to the service.

Janice Mortimer was born Janice Jo Rodman, daughter of Charles D. and Almeda (Gordon) Rodman, on December 25, 1929, 1 mile east of Hitchcock, SD. She lived in Hitchcock, where she attended school, and graduated as valedictorian of her class at Hitchcock High School in 1947. She then attended Northwest College of Commerce in Huron.

On May 8, 1948, Janice married James Edward Mortimer in Huron. They made their home in Hitchcock until 1960 when they moved to De Smet, SD, for 1 year. They moved to Huron until 1970 when they moved to Aberdeen where they lived for the next 20 years. She retired in 1990 and they returned to Hitchcock.

Over the years Janice held various part time jobs but preferred being a Homemaker, Wife, Mom, Grandma, and serving where needed with the Christian Church. Jim and Janice enjoyed a lot of trips to visit their family.

Janice was a member of Huron Christian Church; Hitchcock American Legion Post #84 Auxiliary; the Senior Citizens Club; and County Liner Extension Club.

Janice is survived by her husband, Jim of Hitchcock; 5 children, Frank J. (Karon) Mortimer of Indianola, IA, Janell Mae (Jerry) Kallenberger of Rootstown, OH, Cleo Kay (Doug) Tiede of Lexington Park, MD, Joan Lea (Dave) Pfortmiller of Delta, CO, and Leah Dee (Raymond) Wright of Hitchcock, SD; 4 sisters-in-law, Annette Kay (Art) Olsen of Hitchcock, SD, Verna Mae Rodman of Huron, SD, Joyce Rodman of Ihlen, MN, and Irene Stevens of Huron, SD; 12 grandchildren, Joy (Naser) Abu Shanab, Jeffery (Naomi) Kallenberger, Jason (Michelle) Tiede, Chad (Briana) Tiede, Kari Jo Tiede, Raeann (Roger) Mulcahy, James D (Julia) Mortimer, Beth (Nathan) Cooper, Kelli (Skyler) Brandt, Chandra (David) Slade, Danielle Wright, and Cody Wright; 17 great-grandchildren, Garrison Mulcahy, Aleah Mulcahy, Judah Cooper, Clara Cooper, Ellee Cooper, Simon Cooper, Alia Abu Shanab, Gabriel Kallenberger, Alec Kallenberger, Ashley Kallenberger, Ethan Mortimer, Evan Mortimer, Rachel Mortimer, Collin Tiede, Dylan Tiede, Hazel Tiede, Alice Tiede; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers, Roderick (Dorothy) Rodman, Bruce Rodman, and Blair Rodman.
