Obituary

James Sheffield, age 58, of Huron died Monday, November 19, 2012, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. His memorial service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at the United Parish of Alpena. Memorial visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. James Dean Sheffield was born July 16, 1954 in Huron, SD to Clayton and Eileen (Schorzman) Sheffield. He was raised on the family farm outside of Alpena. Jim graduated from Alpena High School in 1972. He graduated from the University of South Dakota with a bachelor's degree in political science/criminal justice. Jim lived and worked in Vermillion, SD from 1976 to 1991 as the first Assistant Chief of Campus Police for most of the time, and as Chief for the last 3 or 4 years. During that time he was heavily involved in horse trading and training. Jim married Kathy Ford and the couple had two boys, Jake and Sam. He left the University in 1991 to work as the security manager for Casino Omaha until 1994. In 1995, Jim moved to Highlands Ranch, CO. He worked for US West, later Quest, as an investigator and later the Director of the EEO Group. While still working in Colorado, Jim started buying rental property in Huron, SD. In 1996, Jim married Mar Sternburg in Castle Rock, CO. The couple moved to Brandon, SD, to continue working for Quest. After retiring from Quest 2008, Jim and Mar moved to Huron where they opened Mar's Bar and Liquor Store. Jim is survived by his wife, Mar of Huron; two sons, Jake (Liz) Sheffield of Sioux Falls, Sam Sheffield of Vermillion; sister, Marjean (Dallas) Moe of Huron; serveral nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Wayne Sheffield in 2002.
