Obituary

James R. Dick Namanny, age 79, of 1249 Idaho Ave SE, Huron, passed away Thursday, August 31, 2006, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Monday, September 4, at the Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Brian Grover officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call from 3:00 to 9:00 PM Sunday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 7:00 to 8:30 PM, or Monday morning prior to the service at the church. James Richard Dick Namanny was born on January 17, 1927, to Hans and Beatrice (Schamp) Namanny in Huron. He grew up in the Wolsey area and attended school there. He enlisted in the United States Navy on January 12, 1945 and served on the USS William C. Miller DE 259 a destroyer escort ship during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on July 6, 1946. He returned to the Huron area and met Ruth Donodea Schorzmann and they were married in June 1947. Dicks working career consisted of house painting, neon sign maker, and owning Huron Radio & TV for 40 years retiring in 1998. Dick took great pride in his family, country and church. He supported his children as well as his grandchildren. Attending soccer, volleyball and basketball games wherever they may be. He volunteered with Huron RSVP program supporting sports activities at the Huron Arena, helping with South Dakota Special Olympics softball. He enjoyed bowling, horseshoes, and cribbage. Dick and Ruth have owned a cabin at Lake Byron for 35 years. The doors on the cabin were always open to anyone wanting to build wonderful memories that would last a lifetime. He was a member of the William Reaves American Legion Post #7, 40 et 8, Forrest McMullen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1776, Huron Elks Lodge 444, and the United States Navy Memorial Foundation. He and Ruth have been a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ for 55 years where they both taught many classes of Sunday and Bible School and served on all boards at the church. He is survived by his loving wife Ruth of Huron; 1 son, Kim (Peggy) Namanny of Colorado; 3 daughters, Tamara Steger of Aberdeen, Rhonda (Dan) Schneider of Colorado and Michelle (David) Gascoigne of Huron; 9 grandchildren, Tricia, Alicia, Melinda, Benjamin, Mariah, Christyl, Carrissa, Garred and Corinne; 4 great-grandchildren, Mercedez, Landon, Kyra and Lauren; and 4 sisters, Joyce Rodman of Ihlen, MN, June (Lyle) Baker and Shirley (John) Bell both of Rapid City and Janet Volmer of Loveland, CO; and many nieces, nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, Maxine Hein and his grandson Forrest Schneider. Casket bearers will be all his grandchildren, Tricia Marcuson, Alicia Namanny, Melinda Lawson, Benjamin Gascoigne, Mariah Namanny, Christyl Steger, Carrissa Schneider, Garred Gascoigne and Corinne Schneider.
