Jacob S. Boomsma, age 88, of Huron, SD, passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at Huron Regional Medical Center.

His funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 7, 2015 at First United Methodist Church in Huron, with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

His visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, December 6, at First United Methodist Church; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Jacob S. Boomsma, the son of Steve and Elizabeth (Miedema) Boomsma, was born on February 21, 1927 in Huron, SD. He attended Broadland grade school and Huron High School until his sophomore year when he had to leave school to help on the farm.

Jake married Alieda Anderson on August 22, 1947 in Willow Lake, SD. To this union was born a son, Dennis Boomsma. Jake married Joycelyn (Kay) Bauman on April 14, 1961 in Pipestone MN. The couple made their home on the family farm near Hitchcock, SD. Jake farmed until moving to Huron in 2005, but he still did a lot of work on the farm, and the family soon discovered that you can take the man off the farm but you can't take the farm out of the man.

Jake was a lifetime resident of Beadle County. He was a member of Broadland United Methodist Church, and Broadland Methodist Men. He was also a member of Broadland Township Board and a past member of the FHA Board. Jake enjoyed playing cards, going to livestock auctions, word puzzles and attending his grandchildren's activities. Jake was a very hard worker. His first love was the farm especially combining. Jake was a selfless person and was always willing to help anyone who needed it.

Grateful for having shared in Jake's life are his wife Joycelyn (Kay) of Huron, SD; his children, Dennis (Connie) Boomsma of Box Elder, SD, Joel Wing of Huron, SD, Lori (Tellus) Waddell of Marvin, SD, Steve (LeAnn) Boomsma of Hitchcock, SD, Kathy (Rich) Skorheim of Huron, SD, Kenny (Patti) Boomsma of Hitchcock, SD, and Mark (Sheri) Boomsma of Clark, SD; grandchildren, Denene (Scott) Wilson, Darius Boomsma, Daene (Jamie) Boomsma, Dirk (April Thurston) Boomsma, Denika (Steve LaJoie) Boomsma, Liz (Tim) Brooks, Isaiah (Lisa) Waddell, Lucas (Manda Koening) Waddell, Levi (Tayla Schulte) Waddell, Charise Boomsma, Jacob (Kassie) Boomsma, Tyler Boomsma, Jordann (Adam) Hansen, Tyler McLain, Josh (Lindsay) Boomsma, Alicia Price, Patrick (Chelsea Kendrick) Price, Katie (Chris) Schortzmann, Matthew Boomsma, Nikki Boomsma, Justin Boomsma, Kardell Boomsma, Nicholas Barrie, Troy Boomsma, Coby Boomsma, Travis Dailey. Allison Dailey, Ashley Dailey, Christian Boomsma, and Kaytlyn Boomsma; 25 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild; his sisters, Agnes Teveldal, Liz Hiles, and Carol Brenner all of Huron, SD; sister-in-law, Sally Boomsma; and many nieces and nephews.

Jake was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Alieda Boomsma; brother, Richard Boomsma; sister, Reva Stengle; mother- and father-in- law, Glen and Opal Bauman; and brothers-in-law, Ed Brenner, Harold Nordaker, Ray Stengle, Bud Rathjen, and Lloyd Teveldal.

Memorials may be made in Jake's name to the Huron Area Senior Center.
