Al Schwan, age 76, of Hitchcock, died Friday, May 19, 2006, at his home. His Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 23, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with Father Joe Holzhauser officiating. Burial of his cremated remains will be held at a later date at Altoona Cemetery, Hitchcock. There will be a Scripture Service at 7:00 PM Monday evening at the Welter Funeral Home. There will be no visitation. Ignatius Al Aloys Schwan was born on February 1, 1930, to Denis and Barbara (Volk) Schwan at Rugby, ND. He attended rural school at Rugby. He later moved with his parents to Devils Lake, ND, where he attended school. Al farmed on the family farm in North Dakota until he entered the U.S. Air Force on October 31, 1950. He was honorably discharged on October 31, 1954. Al then attended Wahpeton School of Science at Wahpeton, ND, for 2 years and received a degree in accounting. He moved to Huron in 1962 where he was involved in sales. On July 13, 1963, Al married Phyllis Lovett at St. Martins Catholic Church at Huron. They lived in rural Huron until 1966 when they moved to a farm in rural Hitchcock and have lived in the Hitchcock are since that time. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron, and the Raymond-Hart American Legion Post #84 of Hitchcock. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Hitchcock; 2 daughters, Barbara (Mark) McCray of White Water, CO, and Linda Schwan of Hitchcock; 2 sons, Andy Schwan of Hitchcock, and Philip Schwan of Hitchcock; 1 foster-son, Alan (Lyn) Quam of Huron; 2 grandchildren, Tiana Gahm, and Dawson Gahm; 2 brothers, Simon (Pat) Schwan of Michigan, ND, and Maurice (Rosemary) Schwan of Devils Lake, ND; 5 sisters, Sister Barbara Marie Schwan of Hankinson, ND, Margaret (John) Brinster of Devils Lake, ND, Monica Nelson of Devils Lake, ND, Berta Schell of Bismarck, ND, and Fran Schwan of Devils Lake, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Vincent Schwan, and David Schwan; 5 sisters, Mathilda Burckholder, Ottilia Schwan, Mary Lavinger, and 2 sisters in infancy.
