Dr. Howard L. Saylor Jr., age 88, of 1360 Ohio Ave SW, Huron, died Monday, April 10, 2006 at the Methodist Hospital at Rochester, MN. His Memorial Service will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 15th at Grace Episcopal Church with Father George Parmeter officiating. A private family graveside service will be at Riverside Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Friday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Grace Episcopal Church or the Mary Ann Saylor USD Medical School Scholarship Foundation. Howard L. Saylor Jr. was born on July 25, 1917, to Howard L. and Claire (Lyken) Saylor at Cogswell, ND. He moved with his family to Huron, attended Huron schools and graduated from St. Johns Military Academy, Delafield, WI. His pre-med education was at Huron College and the University of South Dakota where he then attended USD Medical School followed by Northwestern Medical School. He completed his surgical residency at the Mayo Foundation. On April 9, 1943, Howard married Mary Ann Peterson in Huron. During World War II, Dr. Saylor was commissioned as a Captain with the 34th Division, serving as battalion surgeon for the 135th Infantry Division. After his honorable discharge from the United States Army, he completed his surgical residency and in 1950 began his medical practice in Huron, retiring in 2000. Howard believed strongly in the community of Huron and served in many capacities. He was a member of the Huron Masonic Lodge #26 AF & AM, York & Scottish Rite, past Potentate Yelduz Shrine, James Valley Shrine Club & Motor Corp, Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776, Huron Elks Lodge #44, William Reaves American Legion Post #7, Huron Sertoma Club, past president and member Huron Chamber of Commerce, member & Vestry of Grace Episcopal Church, past president of the Huron Country Club, Charter member of the North Central Athletic Society. Medicine was his life for over 50 years. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons; Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery; Huron Regional Medical Center: Chief of Staff, Hospital Board & Chairman of the Surgical Committee; past president of South Dakota State Medical Association, Priestly Society (Mayo Surgical Society) and member of the Advisory Council; regional Trauma Chairman of American College of Surgeons; founding member of DakotaCare Health Insurance Company; and other numerous medical boards. His family and friends were his greatest love but he enjoyed golf, hunting, music and travel in our great country, USA. He is survived by his daughter Diane (Dr. Roger) Wilson of Rapid City, SD; two sons, Dr. Howard (JoEllen) Saylor III of Edina, MN and Dr. Jim (Denise) Saylor of Watertown, SD; 7 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Katherine, Meredith, Kathryn, Christopher, Anne and Lauren; two great grandchildren, Olivia and Wilson; and one nephew, Michael Polad of Minneapolis, MN. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann Saylor on October 1, 1992, his parents, and his sister, Kathryn Jean Verde.
