Obituary

Herschel Lloyd Plate, age 81, of Alpena, SD, died Thursday, November 16, 2006, at the Huron Nursing Home. His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Sunday, November 19, at the United Parish of Alpena with Rev. Sarah Herman officiating. Burial will be Rest Haven Cemetery at Alpena with Military Rites by the Owens-Kunze American Legion Post #116 of Alpena. Friends may call this Saturday afternoon and evening and Sunday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Sunday afternoon. The family will be present from 5:00 to 8:00 PM this Saturday evening at the funeral home. Herschel Lloyd Plate was born on March 18, 1925, to Sheldon and Florence (Skinner) Plate in Alpena, SD. He spent his childhood and youth in Alpena where he attended school. Lloyd enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 9, 1943. He served as a rifleman in Company E of the 502nd Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division during World War II. He spent 19 months overseas in Europe and participated in the invasion of Holland and the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne, Belgium. He was honorably discharged on April 26, 1947, as a Staff Sergeant. While in the service Lloyd was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Bronze Star. On July 18, 1946, Lloyd married Geneva Daleske in Huron, and they have always lived in Alpena. On October 1, 1950, he was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict and was stationed at Ft. Riley, KS, where he trained recruits with the 77th Infantry Rifle Company. He was honorably discharged on August 9, 1951. Lloyd returned to Alpena and worked for Alpena Farm Services and later the Alpena Co-op Oil Company, retiring in 1987. He then worked part time as a Deputy Sheriff of Jerauld County, and as Alpenas town policeman. Lloyd helped promote and worked towards building the Jerauld County Trap Club. For many years he taught the Hunter Safety Course and mentored many young people in the sport of hunting. He was a member of the United Parish of Alpena; the Owens-Kunze American Legion Post #116 of Alpena where he was the Sergeant-at-Arms in charge of the color guard for many veterans funerals and presented the American flag, which the veterans served under, to their families; and a life-member of vfw Post #5548 of Wessington Springs. He is survived by his wife, Geneva of Alpena; 1 daughter, Jenise (Gary) Knox of Fort Dodge, IA; 1 son, Bruce (Ruby) Plate of vermillion, SD; 5 grandchildren, Dr. Eric Knox (fiance Jessica) of Fort Dodge, IA, Jason (Sara) Knox of Iowa City, IA, Kathy Plate of Ft. Collins, CO, Karrie Plate of Vermillion, SD, and Sarah Plate of Vermillion, SD; 1 great grandson Cameron Knox of Iowa City, IA; 2 sisters, Leona (Clyde) Ross of Mitchell, SD, and Phyllis (Allen) Krueger of Vancouver, WA; 2 sisters-in-law, Dorothy Plate of Huron, and Doris Kieser of Wessington Springs; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers, Earl, Richard, Wallace, Wilbur, and Paul; 1 sister, Alice Reimer; 3 sisters-in-law, Alma Plate, Louvaine Plate, and Carmella Plate; 1 brother-in-law, Milton Reimer.
