Obituary

Herman Jans, age 89, of 1225 Minnesota Ave. SW, Huron, died Thursday, December 1, 2005, at the Huron Nursing Home. A private family service will be held on Saturday at the Welter Funeral Home with Rev. Dale Sattgast offficiating. Friends may call this Friday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home. Herman Harold Jans was born on March 25, 1916, to Alexander and Lydia (Meillaud) Jans at Creighton, SD. He grew up and attended school in the Ree Heights area. He worked in Minnesota with Green Giant Factories. On April 28, 1940, Herman married Edna Rath at Miller, SD. The couple lived in Huron. He was employed at Armour & Company for a short period of time, then managed the Tydola Vedol Gas Station in Huron. He was later employed as a car salesman for Wilson Motors, and also for Porter-Swenson Ford until his retirement in 1978. The couple continued to live in Huron. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, was an avid bowler, and managed the Huron Area Senior Center Horseshoe Tournament for many years. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting over the years, and always raised a large garden. He is survived by his wife, Edna of Huron; 1 daughter, Donna (Donald) Hein of Huron; 2 grandchildren, Kimberly (David) Mattke of Huron, and Josh Hein of Brookings; 2 great grandchildren, Tyler Mattke, and Myranda Mattke; 1 brother, Elmer Jans of Murryville, GA; 2 sisters, Annette Kost of Huron, and Esther (Abe) Ritchhart of Huron; 1 step-sister, Irene King of Philip, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 sister, Alma; 5 step-brothers, Albert, Leo, Philmore, Harold, and Emil Kost; and 1 step-sister, Clara Eilts.
