Obituary

Helen Maass, age 102, of Huron, SD, died Saturday, August 31, 2013, at her home. Her funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 5, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at St. Martin Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Wednesday, September 4, from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with a scripture service at 7:00 p.m.; or Thursday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Helen Maass was born on March 5, 1911, the youngest of 13 children to Bernard and Susan (Halpen) Garry, in Bridgewater, SD. Helen moved with her family to Yale, SD, when she was 5 years old, where she attended school. She attended Notre Dame Academy in Mitchell, SD, for her sophomore and junior years of high school, and attended Iroquois High School for her senior year and graduated in 1929. She returned to Notre Dame College in Mitchell for college for one year and received her teaching certificate, teaching in country school for 6 years. On October 30, 1937, Helen married Bernard "Turney" Maass at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cavour, SD. The couple lived in Yale for 7 years until Turney entered the U.S. Army during World War II. After her husband recuperated from war wounds and was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1947, the couple moved to Huron in 1947. Helen worked for Montgomery Ward stores for 31 years, beginning in Columbus, GA, where she lived while her husband was in the U.S. Army. She later transferred to the Mitchell store, then to the Huron store where she received numerous awards for salesmanship. Helen retired in 1975. Helen was devoted to the Catholic Church with a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish (St. Martin Church) and the altar society. Helen was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. She especially enjoyed her time visiting with her friends at the Donut Shoppe, McDonalds and Burger King. Helen loved people and was interested in what was happening in the lives of others. Helen's love of dancing and of music was lifelong and legendary. She spent many hours playing the piano - by ear - for the residents of the Huron Nursing Home (SunQuest Healthcare Center) as well as for any occasion when she was asked to play. She was always up for a card game, especially "pennies". She is survived by many nieces and nephews. The list of the many people whose lives she touched, and that she was enriched by in return, is endless. She was loved by so many and in return was generous with her love and interest. For the many who have looked after her, loved her, and assisted her in these last years, know that God and Helen are looking down upon you and offering blessings. All of you have been Helen's angels on earth. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Turney on February 9, 1985; 9 brothers, Leo, Ray, Frank, Charles, Joe, Gene, Paul, Harry, and Merle Garry; 3 sisters, Grace O'Brien, Ethel Garry, and Maye Welsh.
