Helen Long, age 94, formerly of 455 6th St NE, Huron died Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Huron Regional Medical Center. A private burial service of her cremated remains will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. Helen E. Backer was born on August 7, 1917 to Henry and Anna (Nickisch) Backer at Crandon, South Dakota. She grew up and attended school in Spink County. On June 22, 1937, Helen married Earl Long at Huron. They owned and operated Long's Produce and later she managed the Food Service in the Huron Middle School. She was a member of American Lutheran Church. Helen is survived by one son, Larry (Gloria) Long of Rushmore, MN; one daughter, Sandra (Steve) Palmer of Richmond, TX; four grandchildren, Les (Lori) Long of Piedmont, SD; Tammy (Dan) Janssen of Lake Wilson, MN, Darcy (Al) Vis of Worthington, MN, and Ken (Yvonne) Palmer of Temecula, CA; ten great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; one sister, Ardell Squires of Santa Ana, CA; and several nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Earl in 1983; one daughter-in-law, Karon Long; four brothers; five sisters; one sister in infancy; twin great granddaughters; and one great grandson.
