Obituary

Helen Gascoigne, age 85, of Huron, died Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Huron Regional Medical Center. Her funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014, at Congregational United Church of Christ in Huron with burial at Restlawn Memory Garden Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be from 6-8 pm Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at Welter Funeral Home; or Thursday morning one hour prior to the service. Helen Louise Gascoigne was born July 11, 1928 in Chula, Missouri, daughter of Oscar and Vergie (Lightner) Hurst. Helen grew up in the Bonilla area and attended school through the 8th grade. She then worked for the Flolo family as a housekeeper and nanny. Helen met the love of her life Clifford (Gene) Gascoigne in 1949 and they were married March 24, 1950 in Huron S.D. Their first home was a one room house 7 miles NE of Huron SD. They lived on many farmsteads throughout their marriage. When they retired from farming they moved to a small acreage West of Huron, they lived there for 16 years before moving to Huron due to their health. Helens biggest achievements in life were her children, Charles, David, Dawn, and Gena. Family was a very important part of her life. She had many wonderful attributes some of them being a loving daughter, kind and caring sister, devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and great-grandmother. Helen was a very quiet and reserved woman and a great friend to many. Whomever Helen would meet, it seemed as though they all fell in love with her, which was very easy to do. Being a farmer's wife was life full filling for her also. She enjoyed becoming a jigsaw puzzle master, Reading Western and Romance books, playing cards, board games, and watching the Twins. But probably her favorite thing in life was spending time with her family and friends, the more the merrier. She also was a Life Time Member of South Dakota Farmers Union, Willing Workers and Helping Hands Club. The thing that Helen will be remembered most for is her role as wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. We will miss her more than we can even begin to imagine. Helen is survived by her husband, Clifford (Gene) of Huron; 4 children, Chuck of Huron, David (Michelle) of Huron, Dawn (Rick) Byrd of Madison, Gena (Eddie) Rusher of Carthage; 13 grandchildren, Angela Thuestad, Heidi Gascoigne, Erik (Angela) Gascoigne, Hilary Robey, Shane Gascoigne, Jesse (Jessica) Lilleskov, Stacy (Robby) Tryon, Brian (Elizabeth) Byrd, Benjamin (Kimberly) Gascoigne, Garred Gascoigne, Brad (Melinda Simpson) Rusher, Jamie (Travis) Stevens and Erin Rusher; 19 great-grandchildren; Adam and Josh Thuestad, Katie Gascoigne, Henry Gascoigne, Adelle Gascoigne, Eleanor Gascoigne, Stella Gascoigne, Ender Robey, Skylee Robey, Kyla Lilleskov, Ethan Lilleskov, Peyton Tryon, Alyssa Tryon, Brooke Knutson, Skylar Knutson, Terry Stevens, Kaylie Stevens, Kilie Stevens, Corbin Byrd; brother, George Hurst of Sioux Falls; sisters, Marge Frank of Sioux Falls, Dorothy Brandenberg of Sioux Falls; one sister-in-law, Peggy Snyder of Oregon; many, many nieces and nephews.
