Obituary

Harold F. Hack Murphy, age 79, formerly of 1900 Arizona Ave. SW, Huron, died Friday, December 9, 2005, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral mass will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, December 14, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with Father Joe Holzhauser officiating. Burial will be at St. Pauls Cemetery at Iroquois with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Tuesday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the mass at the church Wednesday morning. The family will be present from 6:30 to 8:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home with a Scripture Service at 7:00 PM. Harold Francis Murphy was born on September 24, 1926, to Emmett Joseph and Margaret (McNaboe) Murphy. He grew up on a farm near Iroquois and graduated from Iroquois High School. He served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. He attended Huron College graduating in 1950. On July 5, 1951, he married Dorothy Hazel Bullard. They made their home in Huron. Harold started working for Costains Appliance Store while attending Huron College. He continued to work for Costains until 1974 when he purchased the business. He owned and operated Costains until 1988. During this time he was also a co-owner of Huron Finance and Westview, Inc. He worked for Huron Housing and Redevelopment until he retired in 2004. Always active in community affairs, Harold served as President of the Huron Chamber of Commerce, he also served on their board and was instrumental in bringing the National High School Rodeo to Huron, he was Past Commander and member of the American Legion Post #7 of Huron, a life member of the Huron Elks Lodge, and past chairman of the Parish Council at St. Martin's Church, and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Baseball always played an important role in his life with a playing career spanning 20 years. Harold played second base for the Huron Stahl Flyers when they won the state amateur baseball tournament in 1956. He was inducted into the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame on October 5, 1996. He is survived by two daughters, Mary (Denis) Larson of West Valley City, Utah, and Barbara (Rob) Reeser Jorgensen of Maize, Kansas; one brother, Larry Murphy of Sun City, Arizona; six grandchildren, Cory Weisser, Ashley Weisser, Sarah Jorgensen, Sean (Courtney) Christman, Josh (Shannon Clark) Christman, and Aron Larson; two step grandchildren, Dylan Reeser and Whitney Reeser; three great grandchildren; 1 sister-in-law, Dolores Bullard of Tucson, AZ; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy in 2004; a brother, Robert Murphy; 2 sisters-in-law, Lila Murphy, and Doris Murphy Dietz; and his stepfather, Henry Rieck.
