Harold Wayne Modine, age 79, of 1460 Idaho Ave. SE, Huron, died Friday, December 24, 2004, at his home. His funeral service will be at 1:30 PM Monday, December 27, at American Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening and Monday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Monday afternoon. The family will be present from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Sunday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to American Lutheran Church or the Huron Regional Medical Center Hospice. Harold Wayne Modine was born on November 8, 1925, to Julius and Mildred (Wiegand) Modine at Colome, SD. He grew up in Colome and graduated from Zion Lutheran Parochial Grade School in June of 1940. He was confirmed in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church on May 5, 1940. He graduated from Colome High School in May of 1944. In October of 1944, Harold entered the U.S. Navy. During his tour of duty he served on the USS VMS 106 and the USS LST 708. He was honorably discharged on July 7, 1946. After his discharge he moved to Huron where he attended Huron College for 2 years. He was then employed in the Huron area for a number of years. On November 22, 1952, Harold married Phyllis Mattke at American Lutheran Church. Harold returned to Huron College and graduated in 1954. He was employed with several small finance companies for 33 years. The majority of the time the couple lived in Huron except for 5 years when they lived at Rapid City where Harold was employed. He retired in 1982. He was a member of the Jaycees as a young man, William Reaves American Legion Post # 7 of Huron for 50 years where he served in various offices, a former member of 40 et 8, and the American Lutheran Church. His many interests included woodworking, working in his yard, and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Huron; 1 son, Scott (Sharon) Modine of Huron; 4 brothers, Dale (Iva) Modine of Deerwood, MN, Robert Pete (Phyllis) Modine of Eureka, CA, LeRoy Modine of Eureka, CA, and Vern (Theresa) Modine of Lusk, WY; 2 sisters, Donna (Ken) Drey of Gregory, SD, and Shirley (Tom) Harder of Newcastle, WY; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
