Obituary

Harold E. Laabs, age 93, of 1345 Michigan Ave. SW, Huron, formerly of Carpenter, SD, died Monday, May 19, 2008, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m.. Friday, May 23, at the Welter Funeral Home with Rev. Barry Whipkey officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 1-8 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, or one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Friday. A Prayer Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Thursday night at the funeral home. Harold E. Laabs, the son of Will O. and Mae E. (Rassmussen) Laabs was born on October 1, 1914 in Ivanhoe, MN. He attended school at the District 74 School in Brookings County. He also graduated from Tractor and Equipment training School. Harold married Selma M. Johnson on January 1, 1946, at Hendricks, MN. Harold and Selma lived at Clara City, MN and White, SD before moving to Huron, SD in the fall of 1946. In 1963 the couple moved to Carpenter, SD. In his early years, Harold enjoyed doing custom threshing work. He worked for Cheeseman Construction Company and as a road mantainer for the City of Huron. Harold worked as a general repairman for Bennies Repair in Huron . He then owned and managed Harolds Repair Service in Carpenter until his retirement in 1976. Harold also mowed local cemeteries for a number of years. Harold was a member of the United Methodist Church of Carpenter. He served as the Clerkof Richland Township in Clark County for many years. He enjoyed woodworking, attending his grandchildrens school activities, and driving school bus.. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Selma, Huron, SD; two daughters, Bonnie (Douglas) Pribyl, and Marilyn (James) Schnetzer, all of Wolsey, SD; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Allen) Pickard, Brookings, SD, Matthew (Sabrina) Pribyl, Bristol, SD, Kathy (Matthew) Micheel, Cavour, SD, and Vicki, Joseph, and Teresa Schnetzer all of Wolsey, SD; and 3 great grandchildren, Jonah Pribyl ,and Kaitlyn and Tucker Micheel Harold was preceded in death by his parents; a grandchild, Karen Rae Schnetzer; a brother, Bud Laabs; and two sisters, Lillian Lang and Esther DeLong.
