Obituary

Harold A. Evenson, age 79, of 1999 Dakota Ave. N., Huron, died on Sunday, December 7, 2008 at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 11, 2008 at the American Lutheran Church, Huron with burial at Riverside Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-8 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 6-8 p.m.; or Thursday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.

Harold A. Evenson was born on January 21, 1929, to Thomas Henry and Marietta Marie (Neu) Evenson at La Crosse, WI. He moved with his family to a farm north of De Smet as a child. Harold always said this was 'God's country.' He graduated from Bryant High School.

After graduation he worked for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad before he enlisted in the United States Navy in May, 1951. He served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War as a precision machinist receiving many accommodations and attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer before his honorable discharge in May of 1975.

On May 20, 1961, Harold married Barbara Waldron at Huron. He was an avid gardener and his hobbies were gardening, antiquing, and collecting. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sons of Norway, and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Barbara of Huron; one daughter, Tracey Evenson of Sioux Falls, SD; one son, Jess Evenson of Los Angeles, CA; four sisters, Evelyn Bjordahl of Scottsbluff, NE, Loraine (Kenneth) Warne of Willow Lake, SD, Mary Jane (Larry) Tashner of Bryant, SD and Ardella (Albert) Rydom of Windsor, CO; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Evenson of Willow Lake, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Truman Evenson, and one brother-in-law Carlton Bjordahl.
