Harold Ray Brandenburg, age 88, of Huron, died Saturday, March 5, 2011, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.
His funeral service will be 11:00 am Friday, March 11, 2011, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Wessington Springs with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 pm Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with family present from 6-8 pm and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.; or one hour prior to service at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Wessington Springs or American Diabetes Association.
Harold Ray Brandenburg was born on October 31, 1922, to Julius and Bertha (Schmidt) Brandenburg at Alpena, SD. Harold attended grade school at Wahl Elementary and graduated from Alpena High School in 1941. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran in Wessington Springs and served on the church council.
On January 27, 1950, he was united in marriage to Edna Marie Teveldal.
Harold started his farming career with his Dad and brother, Otto, on the family homestead west of Alpena. He later purchased a farm with his wife in Jerauld County. In 1995 they retired from farming and moved to Huron. In addition to farming, Harold worked part time at the Lundborg store, Bills Super Value, the ASCS office, was a top salesman for the Archer Petroleum Corporation, and worked many years at the South Dakota State Fair.
Harold was very proud of his children. He enjoyed traveling with family members and attending many of his grandchildrens events. His favorite pastimes included playing cards, checkers, camping with the Prairie Pal Camping Club, and sharing his favorite dessert of ice cream and cookies with family and friends. Harold was well known for his smile and he shared it freely. As the sign on his nursing home door stated, Smiles are for Sharing, Always Carry a Spare.
He is survived by his wife, Edna of Huron; seven children, Cheryle (Tim) Kludt of Lakeville MN, Karen (Mark) Scherschligt of Gilbert, AZ, Nancy (Joel) Bialas of Marion SD, Renold (Michelle) Brandenburg of Alpena SD, DelRoy (Karen) Brandenburg, Huron, SD, Dennis (Teresa) Brandenburg of Pierre SD, Patricia (Allan) Hall of Brandon SD; eighteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Bertha Brandenburg; eight siblings and their spouses, Dorothy (Helmuth) Neuharth, Alma Thomas, Marion (Vern) Pratt, Minna (Elmer) Lundborg, Lena (Al) Kringen, Bill (Ardella) Brandenburg, Otto (Rose) Brandenburg, Elizabeth (Richard) Neuharth; and two grandchildren Nichole Fischbach and Jhett Bialas.
