Harlowe Baruth, age 91, of rural Alpena, SD, died Monday, December 25, 2006, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, December 28, at the Welter Funeral Home with Rev. Sarah Herman officiating. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery at Alpena. Friends may call this Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday until time of service at the Welter Funeral Home. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM this Wednesday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the National Kidney Foundation. Harlowe Louis Baruth was born on January 11, 1915, to Louis and Mina (Schroeder) Baruth at Alexandria, Nebraska. As a youth he moved with his family to a farm northeast of Alpena and graduated from Alpena High School in 1932. On August 27, 1941, Harlowe married Elma Gaulke and they lived on the Baruth family farm. Elma died on September 20, 1997, and Harlowe continued to live on the farm to the present time. He served on the Warren Township Board, the Alpena Lumberyard Board, and the Alpena Laundromat Board for several years. Harlowe was a diehard St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan and was especially happy with the results of the 2006 World Series. He loved working on the farm with his son and with his grandchildren as they grew up. He was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as he loved doing projects to help them whenever he could. He is survived by 1 son, Roger (Tena) Baruth of Alpena; 1 daughter, Myrna Baruth of Alpena; 5 grandchildren, Mick (Jody) Baruth of Sioux Falls, Rick (Erica) Baruth of Shawnee, KS, Rob (Melissa) Baruth of Alpena, Corey Baruth of Alpena, and Randy (Meghan) Baruth of Aberdeen; 6 great-grandchildren, Damon Baruth, Stuart Baruth, Courtney Baruth, all of Sioux Falls; Jared Baruth, Adam Baruth, both of Shawnee, KS; and Jaycee Baruth of Alpena; 1 brother, Ernest Baruth of Alpena; nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his best friend and pal, his dog Chipper. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elma; an infant daughter, Faye Eileen Baruth; his parents; a stepfather; 2 sisters; 2 sisters-in-law; and 4 brothers-in-law.
