Harlow Howe, age 71, of 830 9th St. SW, Huron, died Friday, January 19, 2007, at his home. His Memorial Service will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 24, at the Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Brian Grover officiating. Burial of his cremated remains will be held at a later date at Blacks Hills National Cemetery at Sturgis. There will be no visitation. Harlow Hale Howe was born on October 31, 1935, to Clifford and Veronica Vera (Paddock) Howe at Houghton, SD. He received his elementary education in Houghton and attended high school at Hecla, SD. He later took additional education courses and proudly completed his GED. On December 11, 1952, Harlow enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard ship in the western Pacific Theater during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on September 6, 1956. On October 16, 1955, Harlow married Joan Marie Gesling at San Francisco, CA. After Harlows discharge from the U.S. Navy, the couple moved to Columbia, SD, where Harlow worked at a grain elevator for South Dakota Wheat Growers until 1960. They moved to several cities over the years where Harlow continued to work at a grain elevator at Randolph, SD, as manager; Frankfort, SD; and Andover, SD, as manager. The couple moved to Aberdeen where Harlow worked for the water filtration plant for the city. He then worked for the Aberdeen Fire Department, and then spent 20 years as a police officer for the City of Aberdeen. Harlow and Joan also owned and operated Howe Upholstery from 1976-1986. In 1987, they moved to Las Vegas, NV, where Harlow served as a security officer for several different casinos. After 9 years the couple moved to Rapid City, SD, where they lived for 4 years and Harlow was employed in private security work, during the summertime, at KOA Campgrounds. They then moved to Mitchell, SD, for 1 year, where he served in the same capacity. They moved to Huron in 2003. Harlow was employed as host for Memorial Park Campground during 2006, when ill health forced his retirement. He was a member of the FOP, past member of the Houghton Congregational United Church of Christ, past member of the Moose Lodge, and past member of the Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed camping, fishing, woodworking, crafts, leather-working, playing cards, dancing, horseshoes, and yard work. He is survived by his wife, Joan of Huron; 1 son, Keith (Selma) Howe of Roslyn, SD; 2 daughters, Shelley Freeman of Huron, and Jill (Darin) Atherton of Huron; 6 grandchildren, Darrin Howe, David Freeman, Danny Freeman, Brandon Atherton, Shaelynn Freeman, and Heather Atherton; 2 brothers, Francis Buzz (Gladys) Howe of Laredo, MO, and Leon Howe of Glenrock, WY; 5 sisters, Estella Olson of Aberdeen, Doretta Dot Sombke of Aberdeen, Shirley (Ben) Crossan of Kent, WA, Ione (Ken) Behm of Cheney, WA, and Ann Brown of Lake Havasu City, AZ; and 1 brother-in-law, Harold Oban of Darien, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Randall; 1 sister, Helen Oban; 1 sister-in-law, Bertie Howe; and 4 brothers-in-law, Marvin Olson, Ora Sombke, Lee Williams, and Roy Brown.
