Harland L. Nelson, age 91, of 1345 Michigan Ave SW, Huron, died Friday, November 30, 2007 at the Huron Nursing Home. His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 4th at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with Rev. Rick Senner and Rev. Alan Wager officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Visitation will be Monday from 1:00 to 8:00 PM at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 6:30 to 8:00 PM or one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday afternoon. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM Monday evening at the funeral home. Harland Leroy Nelson was born on November 6, 1916, to Engvald and Julia (Haugom) Nelson in Clark County. He grew up on a farm near Bradley, SD and graduated from Bradley High School in 1935. He began working for Armour and Company in Huron after his graduation. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942. He served in Italy and North Africa during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He and Harold Owens opened the Double H Ice Cream Store in 1946. They became partners in Harolds Caf in 1961. On June 25, 1950, Harland married Norma Lockwood at Rapid City. Harland and Norma opened the Barn Restaurant in 1967. He ran a successful business for 38 years. In 2003 he became a resident of the Huron Nursing Home. He was a member of Forrest McMullen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1776 and the William Reaves American Legion Post #7. He is survived by his wife, Norma of Huron; 5 children, James of Huron, Julie (Robert) Lubke of Sioux Falls, Jane, Jeffrey and Joel (Amy) all of Huron; 21 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 daughter-in-law, Joan Nelson, a great grandson Gaige Nelson, a brother, Richard, a sister Lucille Bjerke and an infant brother.
