Obituary

Gordon Hawks, age 92, of Sioux Falls, and formerly of Huron, died Thursday, October 19, 2006, at the VA Hospital at Sioux Falls. His memorial service will be at 11:00 AM Monday, October 23, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with Rev. Rick Senner officiating. There will be a private family burial service at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. (Visitation in Sioux Falls at the Miller Funeral Home will be from 1:00 to 9:00 PM Saturday with the family present from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.) Memorials may be directed to Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Huron, the Sons of Norway Foundation, or the Huron Lions Sight and Sound Foundation. Gordon William Hawks was born March 20, 1914, to Ralph Charles and Karen (Johnston) Hawks in Sioux Falls. He completed elementary school at Riverside and Franklin, Whittier Junior High and attended Washington High School. As a youth, he worked with the Friendly Indians, Pioneers and YMCA. He later worked with the Teen Baseball and Hi-Y Basketball programs and in 1944, he entered the CCC Camp at Rockford, SD. On January 5, 1937, he was united in marriage with Hazel D. Hubbell at Canton, SD and they made their home in Sioux Falls. They celebrated 58 years of marriage in January 1995. In 1944 he entered the US Navy and served aboard the YMS-198 Minesweeper seeing duty on both coasts and in Hawaii and Midway Island. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he enrolled in an Apprentice Electrician program under the GI Bill and worked with Green Electric, Pryde Electric, and Northern States Power. He served as Fire Chief in the South Sioux Falls volunteer fire department before moving to Huron in November of 1954. He was employed by Northwestern Public Service Co. of Huron until retiring in 1979 as a Sub-station Electrician. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Huron, American Legion, VFW, Life member of the Huron Senior Center and served on the RSVP Board and was recognized for 20 years of service to RSVP and Meals on Wheels; 55 year member of IBEW #766 and 32 years member of Solskinn #1 550 Sons of Norway in Huron also serving in various offices. He is a past member of the Huron Lions Club receiving several years of perfect attendance. Gordon was active in the American Lutheran Church in Huron serving as head usher for many years and on various committees. He was the Adopted Grandparent for the Christian Learning Center at American Lutheran Church. He enjoyed bowling and was on the League Championship Team several years as well as receiving the ABC Triplicate Award. He loved fishing and volunteering for which he was recognized in 2004 with the Presidents Volunteer Service Award. In January of 2005 he became a resident of Prairie Crossings in Sioux Falls. He is survived by sons, Alan W. (Bonnie), Sioux Falls, Dennis (Sandra), Sioux City, IA, Howard (Shirley) North Platte, NE, daughter, Karen (Royal) Hoyer, Miller, MO; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; brother, Donald (Donna) Sioux Falls; sister, Eldora Hayes, Sioux Falls; sisters-in-law, Hazel Hawks, Hendricks, MN, Betty (Everett) Hubbell-Lampher, Sioux Falls and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 58 years, Hazel D. (Hubbell) Hawks on March 10, 1995; grandson, Michael Hoyer; great-grandson, Jesse Sterrett; 2 brothers, Melvin and Bobbie; and 2 sisters, June and Sylvia; and half-sister, Stella.
