Bartels, son of Fred & Marie (Scheel) Bartels, was born on April 13, 1917, in rural Virgil, SD. He attended country school through the 8th grade. Glen farmed with his father and brother until he married Irene Rohrer on January 27, 1940 at the American Lutheran Church in Huron. They were married 50 years and had one daughter, Carol. Glen and Irene farmed in the Alpena area and later six miles west of Huron before moving to Huron in 1959. Glen then worked for several building contractors and retired in 1982 as a finish carpenter with Picek Construction Company. After selling his home in Huron in 1994, he moved one mile south to a house that he built in the 1970's, including all the plumbing and electrical work. He also remodeled his daughter's house. Glen loved to play the game of 8-Ball. He competed at State tournaments in Pierre from 1977-1991, and played 8-Ball League until 2002. Carol took her Dad downtown every day to visit with friends, to play a game of 8-Ball or just to watch others play the game. The joy in his life was living with his daughter, Carol. He is survived by his loving daughter, Carol of Huron and her boyfriend Gary Klusman; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Rohrer, Huron, and Marian DeWolf, Oceanside, CA; one brother-in-law, Ray Rohrer, Elk Grove, CA; nine nieces and six nephews. Glen was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene, on August 12, 1990; one brother, Earl and his wife, Evelyn.
