Gladys Johnston, age 86, of Huron, SD, died Friday, February 22, 2103, at SunQuest Healthcare Center. Her funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 26, 2013, at First United Methodist Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Monday, February 25, from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home in Huron; or Tuesday afternoon one hour prior to the service at the church. Gladys Johnston was born Gladys Marilyn Hamilton, daughter of Alvin and Mary (Wilbur) Hamilton, on April 22, 1926, in Tulare, SD. She graduated from Bonilla High School in 1944. Gladys continued her education at Huron College where she received her teaching certificate and then taught at country schools in the Hitchcock and Bonilla area. On August 8, 1947, Gladys married Cleo Johnston at Huron. They lived their entire married life of 62 years in Huron. . Gladys worked in the office of Beadle County Register of Deeds for 29 years, first as deputy and then was elected as Register of Deeds, retiring in August of 1988. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Northside Coffee Drinkers, lifetime member of VFW Forrest McMullen Post #1776 Auxiliary, and active in the Beadle County Democratic Party. Her many interests included spending time with her family, going out to eat, and shopping for clothes. Gladys is survived by 1 son, Larry (Dawn) Johnston of Aberdeen; 1 daughter, Linda (Ronald) Baum of Huron; 5 grandchildren, Daniel Johnston of Sioux Falls, Chrissy (Heath) Mettler of Norfolk, NE, Jennifer (Rob) Bortnem of Brookings, Becky (Jamey) Moeding of Huron, and Darren (Rosaline) Baum of Wichita, KS; 9 great grandchildren, Mason Mettler, Dylan Mettler, Jaxon Mettler, Adley Bortnem, Ava Bortnem, Tristan Moeding, Hannah Moeding, Gavin Moeding, and Ronald Alexander Baum; 1 brother, Rollie (Ebby) Hamilton of Plant City, FL; 2 sisters, Donna Hall of Huron and Joanne Hamilton of Huron; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cleo, on October 25, 2009; 1 son, Donald Johnston in 2008; 2 brothers, Vernon Hamilton and Donald Hamilton; 4 sisters, Dorothy Cockrell, Ardie Lange, Janice Carey, and infant Genevieve Hamilton.
