Gladys "Tootie" Erickson, age 82, of Huron, SD, died Friday, December 21, 2012, at SunQuest Healthcare Center. Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2012, at American Lutheran Church with burial at Ideal Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 5-8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.; or Friday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. The family will be gathering at the Rick & Joette Erickson residence at 778 Idaho Ave SE, Huron. Gladys Erickson was born Gladys Darlene Dietz, daughter of Edward and Lizzie (Braland) Dietz, on March 14, 1930, on the family farm near Garner, IA. She moved to a farm in the Wessington area with her family when she was 10 years old and attended country school. When she was 13 years old the family moved to Huron where she attended high school through the 10th grade. She worked part time as a waitress for the Nuway Café and Frank's Hamburger Shop in Huron. On December 5, 1946, Gladys married Arthur "Art" Erickson at the American Lutheran Church in Huron. She worked at Ravens; operated a day-care business out of her home; and was an apartment complex cleaning inspector for Pugsley Construction. Gladys was very proud of the fact that she returned to her formal education and received her GED when she was in her late 50's. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church; Whist Card Club; Women's Bowling League; and Tops Club. In the early years of her marriage Gladys enjoyed pheasant hunting with her entire family. She also enjoyed spending time with her family especially when the grandchildren would visit, playing cards, crocheting, bowling, reading, and watching movies. She became a resident of SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron in May 2004. She is survived by her children, Carol (Gus) Erickson of Aberdeen, Sandra (Ken) Erickson of Mountain City, TN, Rick (Joette) Erickson of Huron, Vickie Brodkorb of Wessington Springs, and Julie (Jeff) Bryant of Belle Fourche; 13 grandchildren, Alan (Juli) Erickson, Kenneth "Bud" (Lynda) Erickson, Aaron (Becki) Erickson, Steven (Missy) Erickson, Daniel Heinzerling, Matthew Henizerling, Kimberly (Pete) Catoe, Lesli (Doug) Geranen, Sheila (Todd) Gundersen, Nicole (Wayne) Hegdahl, Natalie (D.J.) Wolfskill, Valerie (Anthony) Brodkorb-Dawkins, and Hannah Heinzerling; 24 great grandchildren; 4 sisters, Norma Bonnes of Sioux Falls, Betty (Laurel) Liedtke of Huron, Marjorie (Richard) Freske of Huron, and Charlotte (Dan) Hammer of Surprise, AZ; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Art on May 22, 2005; one son-in-law, Mark Brodkorb; 2 brothers and their spouses, Orlie (Hazel) Dietz, and Robert (Doris) Dietz; 3 brothers-in-law, L.V. "Stub" Bonnes, Jake M. Hofer, and Otis Parmely; 1 nephew, Randy Dietz; and 1 niece, Sharon Bonnes Constantine.
