Obituary

Gilbert Gib Pier, age 87, of 50 7th St. SE, Huron, and formerly of rural Cavour, died Saturday, January 29, 2005, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. His memorial service will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 1st at American Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Brandsrud and Kathy Hibbert officiating. There will be a family graveside service at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery prior to the memorial service. Friends may call Monday afternoon and evening and Tuesday morning at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Monday evening at the funeral home. Gilbert C. Pier was born on August 9, 1917, to Lester and Eutie (Northey) Pier at Huron. He attended school at Sheffield, SD and graduated from Cavour High School. He was employed at International Harvester in Huron for a number of years. On October 5, 1940, Gib married Opal Peskey at Redfield, SD. In 1945, they moved to a farm south of Cavour and lived there until 2003 when they moved to Huron due to Gibs health. He farmed south of Cavour for 59 years. He was a 4-H leader for many years for Pearl Creek. He was a director of the Farmers Elevator at Cavour for many years, a director of Beadle Electric Cooperative for a number of years, and a director of the F & M State Bank of Iroquois since 1973. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Iroquois. Gib served on the Pearl Creek Township Board for many years. He enjoyed farming and fishing. He is survived by his wife Opal of Huron; three sons, Gary Pier of Huron, Craig Pier of Cavour and Steve (Joni) Pier of Yankton; five grandchildren, Rhonda (Scott) Klinkel of Aberdeen, Brenda (Barry) Cranston of Huron, Elizabeth Pier of Brookings, Emily Pier and Andrew Pier both of Vermillion; two step grandchild, Stephanie Stearns of Sioux Falls Douglas Stearns Yankton; three great grandchildren, Jennifer Klinkel of Grand Forks, ND, Chad Klinkel of Aberdeen, and Zackary Cranston of Huron; one brother, Jack (Lois) Pier of Mesa, AZ; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Lulah Arteman and Laura Clarambeau, and four brothers, Manfred, Edward, Loren, and Melvin Pier.
