Obituary

Gilbert Mike Magee, age 75, of 976 9th St. SW, Huron, died Tuesday, November 1, 2005, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. His funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Friday, November 4, at American Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Thursday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Friday morning. The family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Hospice and Home Health. Gilbert Michael Magee was born on July 17, 1930, to Gilbert L. and Maxine (Voigt) Magee at Wessington Springs, SD. He attended school at Wessington Springs. He joined the United States Air Force on January 19, 1949, and served in Korea during the Korean War from September of 1950 until his honorable discharge on October 9, 1952, as a Staff Sergeant. On May 7, 1955, Mike married Shirley Heckenliable at Huron. The couple lived in Huron where he was employed with Osman Motors. In 1963, he began fulltime employment with the 153rd Engineer Battalion of the South Dakota National Guard. He retired in 1990 and continued to live in Huron. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church, William Reaves American Legion Post #7, Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776, 40 et 8, Huron Elks Lodge, Sportsmans Club, Huron Fire Department, and Huron Ambulance. He taught CPR and First-Aid on a statewide basis for many years as an EMT. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, playing cards, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley of Huron; 1 son, Steve (Karen) Marcus of Huron; 3 daughters, Judy (Larry) Greff of Huron, Darla Madden (Karen Wood) and Kelly Rae Magee of Juneau, AK; 5 grandchildren, Sara Greff, Jason (Urla) Marcus, Adam (Chasity) Marcus, Richard Marcus, and Willa Madden Wood; 1 great granddaughter, Stella Marcus; 4 step-grandchildren; 6 step-great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Patricia (Harold) Mettler, Barbara Schuettpelz, and Joyce Reindl all of Wessington Springs; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 brother, Doren Hap Magee; and 2 brothers-in-law, Vernon Schuettpelz and Lloyd Reindl. Casket bearers will be Jerry Micheel, Keith Schrader, Dick Stamp, Craig Pier, Gene DeVries, and Kent Hedge.
