Obituary

Gerald "Smiley" Hotchkiss, age 87, of Huron, formerly of Alpena, SD, passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron. His Funeral Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at the United Parish of Alpena Church in Alpena, SD, with burial at the Rest Haven Cemetery in Alpena, SD and Military Honors by the American Legion Owens-Kunze Post #116. Visitation with family present will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with a prayer service to begin at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night; or visitation on Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Gerald Earl Hotchkiss, the son of Wallace and Lena (Daleske) Hotchkiss, was born on July 26, 1926 in Beadle County in South Dakota. He attended school in Alpena. Gerald served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in December of 1952. Gerald worked at Armour and Company for 18 years. He also owned and operated G and G Recreation Bar and Grill in Alpena, SD for 20 years where he was best known for his "Smiley Burgers". After his retirement from G and G, Gerald worked for the Alpena School as a bus driver and janitor for 18 years. Gerald married Arlene Schaffer on August 27, 1950 at the American Lutheran Parish in Huron, SD. Gerald was a member of the United Parish of Alpena in Alpena. He was also a member of the American Legion Owens-Kunze Post #116. Gerald enjoyed golfing, and music, especially karaoke. While Gerald was a resident of the nursing home, he was often found whistling or playing his harmonica. Fishing was his favorite thing to do and he would fish "all day". Grateful for having shared in Gerald's life are his wife, Arlene of Huron, SD; his five children: Jeff (Pat) Hotchkiss of Woonsocket, SD, Rosie (Bob) Haibeck of Alpena, SD, Larry Hotchkiss, of Huron, SD, Katie (Les) McKinney of Sioux Falls, SD, and Sue (Craig) Thesenvitz of Huron, SD; brother, Gilbert (Joyce) Hotchkiss of Alpena, SD; two sisters, Evonne Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD, and Joyce (Karl) Mees of Alpena, SD; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; brother-in-law, Kenneth Doran of Pierre, SD; sisters-in-law: Delores, Carol, Linda, Liz, Schaffer, Maxine (Jim) Mastin, and Connie (Elby) Crandall; and many nieces and and nephews. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Lena; sister, Lorraine Doran; and brothers-in-law: Allen, Leonard, Leroy, Arnold, and Vernon Schaffer, and Donald Johnson. Jerry will be missed all for his infectious smile and many fish stories.
