Obituary

George C. Zwanziger, age 89, of 1075 4th St. NE, Huron, died Monday, February 7, 2005, at the Huron Nursing Home. His funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Friday, February 12, at American Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Thursday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Friday morning. The family will be present from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home. George Clayton Zwanziger was born on February 4, 1916, to David and Edith (Cooper) Zwanziger at Carpenter, SD. He graduated from Iroquois High School and entered the United States Army on January 29, 1936. On October 20, 1945, he was honorably discharged from the Army having served in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theater during World War II. On February 18, 1947, George married Alma Erickson at Sioux Falls. In 1946 George was employed with the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in Huron. He retired in 1976 after 30 years with the railroad. He and his wife Alma spent 20 winters in southern California in the Palm Springs area. He was a member of American Lutheran Church, Firemans Union of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, William Reaves American Legion Post #7, Forrest McMullen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1776, and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He enjoyed playing shuffleboard, cards and dancing. He is survived by his wife Alma Zwanziger of Huron; one son, Larry (Kay) Zwanziger of Huron; one daughter, JoAnn Zwanziger of Palm Desert, CA; 5 grandchildren, Jeff (Cecile) Zwanziger of Huron, and Jon (Marcia) Zwanziger of Huron, Joel (Becky) Zwanziger of Rapid City, Sherri (Daniel) Hamilton of Azusa, CA, and Carrie Zwanziger of Glendora, CA; 14 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Wilbur Pete (Maxine) Zwanziger of Sioux Falls; and 1 sister, Hazel Cartner of Redfield. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Zwanziger; his parents; 3 brothers, Bud, Leonard, and Howard; and 2 sisters, Gertrude, and Mary.
