George H. Van Scharrel, age 86, of 852 Canary Lane, Huron, died Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at the Huron Nursing Home. His funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 27, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Jonathan Boehne and Rev. L. Scott Spiehs officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Friday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Saturday morning. There will be a Devotional Service at 7:00 PM Friday evening at the funeral home with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorials may be directed to the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund. George H. Van Scharrel was born on November 29, 1920, to John and Henrietta (Dringenberg) Van Scharrel at Critzum, Germany. The church bell was rung to announce his birth. The family moved to the United States in 1929. He graduated from Lake Wilson, MN, High School in 1940. On September 19, 1940, George enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp and served overseas with the 12th Bombardment Group ?The Earthquakers? from July of 1942 to January of 1945 in the European-African Theater and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged on October 4, 1945. After his return home he enrolled as a student at SDSU in Brookings. On May 29, 1949, George married Arlene E. Hellwinckel at Pipestone, MN. In 1950, George graduated from SDSU with an agricultural engineering degree. They moved to Huron in 1951 where he worked in the state A.S.C.S. office. In 1971, George became the Head Program Specialist for the State of South Dakota, a position he held until his retirement in 1984. He was an active member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday school for 20 years and served on various church boards and offices. He was a volunteer for the Huron Area Senior Center RSVP program, and a member of the William Reaves American Legion Post #7, AARP, and NARFE. He enjoyed music concerts and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Arlene of Huron; 2 daughters, Gloria (Robert) Kilpatrick of Morganton, NC, and Ruth (Kirby) Bakken of Rochester, MN; 2 sons, Mark (Julie) Van Scharrel of Downers Grove, IL, and David (Paula) Van Scharrel of Hitchcock, SD; 10 grandchildren, Andrew Van Scharrel, Kevin Kilpatrick, Bryan Van Scharrel, Paul Kilpatrick, Eric Van Scharrel, Jeff Kilpatrick, Alan Bakken, Johanna Van Scharrel, Marlow Bakken, and Michael Van Scharrel; 1 great grandson, Isaac Van Scharrel; 1 great grandson, Isaac Van Scharrel; 1 brother, John (Mae) Van Scharrel of Pipestone, MN; 3 sisters, Wilma Friedlund of Bloomington, MN, Gerda Koopman of Litchfield, MN, and Greta McDaniel of Pipestone, MN; 1 brother-in-law, Melvin (Olga) Hellwinckel of Luverne, MN; 2 sisters-in-law, Caroline (Reynold) Kohrs of Lake City, MN, and Irma (Kenneth) Esch of Caledonia, MN; He was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 brothers-in-law, Wilbert Koopman, and Clarence Friedlund.
