George J. Peterson, age 87, of Huron, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at the SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April, 19, 2014, at the American Lutheran Church with burial at the Riverside Cemetery in Huron. Visitation with the family present will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 18 at the Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Memorials may be made in George's name to the American Cancer Society or to the American Lutheran Church in Huron, SD. George J. Peterson, the son of George and Clara (Holseth) Peterson, was born on January 30, 1927, in Atwater, MN. He attended school and graduated from Atwater High School in 1945. George served his country in the U. S. Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged on July 16, 1946. After the Navy, George attended Dunwoody Institute and worked for the Chappell Duct Company in Wilmer, MN. George also worked for Northwest Public Service for 39 years before retiring in 1992. George married Donna Nelson on June 7, 1952, in Litchfield, MN. The couple moved to Huron, SD, shortly thereafter. George was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Huron. George was a big history buff especially the Civil War. He enjoyed wood working and making small crafts which he would give to his friends. George had a great sense of humor and was always ready with a good joke. He was a great story teller. Grateful for having shared in George's life are his wife, Donna of Huron, SD; son, Tom (Cindy) Peterson of Owasso, OK; grandson, Eric Peterson of Owasso, OK; granddaughter, Bridget (Ryan) Campbell of Sioux Falls, SD; great-grandson, Cole Campbell; sister, Diane (Mike) Sulawski of Minneapolis, MN; sister-in-law, Shirley Peterson of Cosmos, MN; and many nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Dallas Peterson; brothers, Ken and Paul Peterson; and sister-in-law, Theresa Peterson.
