Obituary

George H. Danforth, age 79, of Minden, NV and formerly of Huron, passed away on October 20, 2021 at his home in Minden. His Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at Riverview United Methodist Church in Huron.

George Hagman Danforth was born on July 4, 1942 in Watertown, South Dakota to parents Forrest J. and Hazel (Hagman) Danforth. He grew up in Raymond, graduating from Raymond High School in 1960. He attended Huron College from 1960-1964, and graduated from the University of South Dakota Law School in 1968 with a Juris Doctorate.

He married Frances Barnes, August 15, 1964 in Madison, South Dakota. They lived one year in Salem, Oregon, and returned to Jefferson and Clark, South Dakota. They resided in Huron from 1971-2019, and moved to Nevada to be closer to family in November 2019.

He began his law career in Clark, SD, with the Sherwood Law Office (1968-1971). Moving to Huron in 1971 joining the Sande Law Office, becoming sole owner in 1974.

He served for 10 years as the Beadle County States Attorney. He was a member of the American Bar Association and a 53-year member of the South Dakota Bar Association. He was also active in various professional organizations including: SD State Attorneys Association, National College of District Attorneys, SD Trial Lawyers Association.

George was a member of the Riverview United Methodist Church, Huron Jaycees, chairman and member of the Beadle County Mental Health Board, and a past member on the Salvation Army Advisory Board. In 1986 he received his JCI Senatorship, the highest award in the Jaycee organization.

He had many interests including refurbishing fountain pens and inkwells, and collecting stamps. He enjoyed attending and playing baseball, golf, listening to jazz music, dabbling in antiques and traveling to Lake Tahoe and San Francisco. Spending time with his grandkids was always important to him. His daughters and grandchildren were always able to talk him into going on adventures.

George passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on October 20, 2021, from a prolonged illness with ALS.

George is survived by his wife, two daughters, Carrie (Dave) Vettermann, Reno, NV and Cathy (Neil) Deering, Minden, NV. Three grandchildren: Taylor, Emmett, and Carleigh Deering. Two nephews, Jon (Lynn) Danforth and Forrest L (Jill) Danforth and 1 niece, Lisa (Rick) Bartz—all of Wisconsin; as well as, great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, brother Forrest Jr. and his wife Marge; 1 niece, Paula Danforth, and 1 nephew Jim Danforth.
