Gayle Corrine Gunderson Cranston, of Huron, South Dakota, passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2026 at her home under hospice care with family by her side. Gayle was born November 23, 1935, to James and Kathryn Gunderson at the DeJong Maternity Home in Wessington Springs, South Dakota. From the beginning, Gayle entered the world with a remarkable presence—born a healthy 10-pound baby just days before Thanksgiving—and she lived the same way: with energy, determination, creativity, deep faith, and an enduring love for people, especially children.

Gayle grew up in Jerauld County, five years younger than her brother, Merrill. She attended country schools near her home and graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1952 at age 16. A lifelong doer, she took her first job that summer at the local newspaper, delivering bills to businesses throughout the community.

She enrolled at Huron College in 1952 and attended through 1955. On May 29, 1955, Gayle married Jack Cranston at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wessington Springs, with the Rev. Enoch Hall officiating.

Gayle began her teaching career in 1955, embarking on what became 30 years of service to students across South Dakota. She taught in Selby, Eagle Butte, Meckling, Wessington, Willow Lake, and Lemmon. Music and education were inseparable parts of her life. Her enthusiasm, high expectations, and genuine affection helped generations of children discover their own gifts. Long after retirement, she continued to remember, miss, and love the students whose lives she touched.

The Cranston family welcomed several exchange students into their home during Gayle’s years of teaching, including Mirko of Yugoslavia, Joe of Brazil, Joe’s daughter Haiza, and Naoko of Japan. These relationships expanded the family’s circle and reflected Gayle’s warmth, hospitality, and curiosity about the world.

A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, Gayle gave generously of her time and talents to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Huron. She served as choir director, pianist, part-time youth leader, director of plays and pageants, and bell-choir leader. She also continued the work begun by her mother, Kate, supporting the Kathryn E. Larsen Orphanage in India through their partnership with Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

Gayle’s creativity found another outlet through a close collaboration with her dear friend, Marion Cramer. Together they wrote and produced plays and operettas, including Rumpelstiltskin and productions inspired by classics such as The Music Man and Oklahoma!. Through theater and music, she inspired hundreds of children and created memories that continued long after the final curtain.

After retiring from teaching in 1985, Gayle brought the same entrepreneurial drive to the Huron business community. She opened an Equitable Insurance office and became co-owner of four businesses: the Diet Center, the Coffee Tree in Huron, Equitable Insurance, and her home-based Market America business. In 1991, she focused her efforts on helping small businesses grow and succeed through the South Dakota Marketing Alliance.

One of Gayle’s most treasured accomplishments came later in life. Guided by the words her mother, Kate, carried from her own father—“Stay in the Buggy”—Gayle lived with resilience and a steadfast refusal to give up. At age 87, she fulfilled a lifelong goal of becoming a published author with Stay in the Buggy, a heartfelt tribute to her mother and a lasting record of Kate’s remarkable life. Gayle was deeply grateful to her book club for its encouragement and support in helping make the book possible.

Gayle will be remembered as a force of nature: a teacher, musician, director, entrepreneur, author, faithful servant, and devoted mother and grandmother. Her family carries forward the principle that defined her life: regardless of the circumstances or challenges, always “Stay in the Buggy.”

Gayle is survived by her children, Rick Cranston and his wife, Kristi Froslie Cranston; Carole Wiedenman; Barry Cranston; and Brad Cranston. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Brianne Cranston-Miller and her husband, Terry Miller; Cory Cranston and his wife, Katie Finnie Cranston; Haley Cranston; Quinn Cranston; and Zachary Cranston; and by her great-grandchildren, Jaimison and Emerson Miller; Colton and Peyton Cranston; and Enzo, Ezekiel, and Elik LeDesema.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James “Jim” and Kathryn “Kate” Gunderson; her stepfather, Bill Larson; her brother and sister-in-law, Merrill and Dakota Gunderson; her daughter-in-law, Brenda Pier Cranston; and her son-in-law, Rod Wiedenman.

A memorial gathering to celebrate Gayle's life is being planned for a later date.
