Obituary

Gary G. Pier, age 72, of Huron, died Saturday, September 19, 2015 at Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at American Lutheran Church in Huron. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00-7:00 pm on Tuesday at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron; or one hour prior to the service at the church. Gary Gilbert Pier, the son of Gilbert C. and Opal V. (Peskey) Pier, was born on January 2, 1943 in Huron, SD. He attended school and graduated from Iroquois High School. Gary received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Southern College in Springfield, SD. Gary taught for Iroquois Public Schools for five years and the Huron Middle School for thirty years before his retirement. He also worked for South Dakota Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors Association in Pierre for four years. Gary was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Huron. He was also a member of The Huron Elks and Ducks Unlimited. Gary enjoyed cooking, gardening, hunting, and fishing. He also coached sports for many years and played fast pitch softball in his early years. Grateful for having shared in Gary's life are his wife , Jackie of Huron; his children: Rhonda (Scott) Klinkel of Aberdeen, SD, Beckie Miedema of Florida, Brian (Sammie) Wardner of Williston, ND, and Daniel (Sara) Wardner of Madison, SD; son-in-law, Barry Cranston of Huron, SD; grandchildren: Jennifer (Chad) Letvin of Golden Valley, MN, Chad (Christina McDaniel) Klinkel, Aberdeen, SD, Zack Cranston, Huron, SD, Tyler Wardner of Madison, SD, Logan Wardner of Madison, SD, Aspen Wardner of Williston, ND, Amanda Breyer, Saint Thomas, U.S Virgin Islands, Jordan Breyer of New Jersey, and Jacob Breyer of New Jersey; two brothers: Craig Pier of Cavour, SD and Steve (Joni) Pier of Yankton, SD; brothers-in-law, Scott Connell of DeSmet, SD and Craig (Kate) Connell of Pierre, SD; 1 sister-in-law, Pat (DeWayne) Hopkins of Ft. Smith, AR; and mother-in-law, Mahalia Connell of Huron, SD. Gary was preceded in death by his parents Gilbert and Opal Pier; and daughter, Brenda Cranston.
