Gary L. Johnson, age 64, of Watertown died Wednesday, November 9, 2011 in Watertown after battling cancer. His funeral will be 10:30 am Saturday, November 12, 2011 at American Lutheran Church in Huron with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Huron including military rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Visitation with family present will from 6-8 pm Friday November 11, 2011 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron; or one hour prior to the service. Gary Lee Johnson was born May 11, 1947 to Delbert O. and Betty Jean (Wiese) Johnson in Huron. He attended Huron schools and graduated from Huron High School in 1966. After graduating, Gary moved to Seattle for a time. He attended the Lake Area Tech Aviation Program, and then entered the Navy. Gary served almost ten years in the Navy, serving in Vietnam. Gary then returned to South Dakota and became an instructor at Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown. He was an Aviation Maintenance Instructor for 30 years upon his retirement. Gary married Michele Moldrem in Huron on August 28, 2010. Gary was an avid racing fan, following NASCAR and the local races. He also enjoyed watching TV, being outdoors, and the wildlife around his home. Gary was a lifelong member of D.A.V. and V. F. W. Gary is survived by his wife, Michele Johnson of Watertown; his daughter, Dawn (Darren) Bistodeau of Florence, SD; four grandchildren, Landon McGillvrey, Haydon Bistodeau, Lawson Bistodeau, Holdon Bistodeau; sister, Barbara (Al) Moret of Madrid, IA; two nephews, Chad and Mike Moret. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, 1st Lt Mark Moret.
