Galen's graveside service will be 10:30 AM Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Welter Funeral Home with Family and Friends welcome with military honors by the Huron Veterans Council.


Visitation with the family present, will be Friday, May 18, from 5-7 at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron.


Galen D. Nelson, 80 of Huron, SD, passed away peacefully on April 12th, 2018 in Sioux Falls, SD.

Galen was born and raised in Huron, moved to California in 1966, raised his family, retired from Southern California Edison in 1992 and returned home to Huron with his wife of almost 60 years, Janice Helseth Nelson, they were married in 1958.

He loved working on cars, collecting cars, especially his pride corvettes. Tinkering with projects, wood working, riding motorcycles, even attended Sturgis once, hunting, fishing, camping and always with their beloved dogs, shooting, welding, had every tool imaginable and if he didn't have it he would make it!     He served in the Navy, was a leader in the Boy Scouts when Wayne was a youth.  While working with Edison he and Janice cooked and served at many of their large events for hundreds of people, always willing to lend a hand.

Galen is survived by his 3 children: Debra Starzl, of Crooks, SD, Wayne Nelson and Cynthia Minter of San Bernardino, CA, their families, grandchildren and great grandchildren and extended family.

Galen was preceded by his parents, his wife, Janice in 2017; and brother, Gordon Nelson.
