Frederick Fred Sarahan, age 85, formerly of 1042 Beach Ave. SE, Huron, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital at Sioux Falls. His Memorial Mass will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 4, at St. Martin Catholic Church with Father Donald Imming officiating. Burial of his cremated remains will be at St. Martin Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. The family will be present from 7:00-8:30 PM Tuesday evening at the Welter Funeral Home with a Scripture Service at 7:30 PM. The family requests that memorials be designated to the Alzheimers Association or Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Frederick Phillip Sarahan was born on May 20, 1919, to Patrick Leo and Joanne Mary (Blume) Sarahan at Huron, SD. He attended Huron public schools and graduated from Huron High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 9, 1942, during World War II and served as an Aviation Radioman. He was honorably discharged on February 5, 1946. After his discharge he worked as a plumber in several locations, spending many years in Rapid City, SD. He retired in 1971 and returned to Huron where he lived until September of 2003 when he became a resident of Kingsbury Memorial Manor in Lake Preston. He was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church, and the Plumbers Union. While he was a senior in High School, Fred was selected for the High School All-Sate Football team. Among his many interests were playing golf, playing horseshoes, and bike riding. He is survived by 1 sister, Betty (Jim) Brinkman of Huron; 11 nieces and nephews, Patricia (Ken) Weber of Wolsey, Mike (Connie) Sarahan of Huron, Gerry Gaeta of Louisiana, Betty (Mary) Fenlon of Ohio, Monica (Gary) Buesing of Huron, Deanna (John) Parker of New York, Teresa Brinkman of New Mexico, Jim J. Brinkman of Huron, Joe P. Brinkman of Huron, Laura (Lloyd) Lovelace of Virginia, and Elizabeth deLima of Wyoming. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 brother, Pat Sarahan; 1 sister, Eilene Kurtzbein; 1 sister-in-law, Lois Sarahan, and 1 brother-in-law, Fritz Kurtzbein.
