Obituary

Frank Meyers, age 92, of Huron, and one of the greatest generations, passed away peacefully to meet the Lord on Friday, September 9, 2016 at his residence with his family by his side.

His funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at American Lutheran Church in Huron with burial and military honors by Huron Veteran's Council following at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at Welter Funeral Home; or visitation one hour prior to his funeral service at the church.

Frank was born to Andrew Meyers and Matilda (Freese) on March 20, 1924 in Valen, SD in the family home. The Meyers family later moved to Wessington, SD, where Frank grew up and attended school.

In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and completed basic training at Fort Snelling, Minnesota prior to joining the European conflict of World War II. There he served as part of the 2nd Calvary Division of General Patton's notorious Third Army. Frank earned the following decorations for his service in World War II: Army Sharp Shooter Badge, Army Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation in Germany Medal, and Army Honorable Discharge Pin. He returned to Huron in 1946 after his honorable discharge from the Army.

On August 25, 1949, Frank married the love of his life, Evelyn (McNutt) Meyers. The two made their home in Huron where they raised two children and were married for 41 years until Evelyn's passing on October 25, 1990.

From the early 1950's to the early 1960's Frank was employed moving and setting up trailer houses. He then managed the V.F.W. Club in Huron until the late 1960's and then worked at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron with his wife Evelyn. In the early 1970's, Frank worked as a grain inspector for the Aberdeen Grain Association for many years until his retirement. After retirement, he managed the Huron Moose Lodge until 1991. He was also involved in the local VFW and enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins games on television.

Frank is survived by his 2 children, son Danny Meyers and daughter Sandy Parkhurst; 7 grandchildren: Pam (Mike) Bunn, Jodi Laird, Trisha Parkhurst, Jessica (Jason) Wagner, Shawn (Tara) Meyers, Saundra (Chris) Silva, and AJ Meyers; 17 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Gladys (Harold) Owens; and two brothers, Lyle Meyers and Gene Meyers. He also spent the final years of his life with his special friend Carol Swearingen.

Frank is preceded in death by his parents, Matilda and Andrew; 7 siblings: George Meyers, Bernard (Marie) Meyers, Ernest Meyers, Alva Meyers, Art (Rita) Meyers, Lucille (Joe) Maunders, and Angeline (John) Forbes; his grandson, Frank Allen Meyers in infancy; his beloved wife, Evelyn Meyers; and his son-in-law, Cliff Parkhurst.
