Francis Fran Lorenz, age 85, of Huron, died Sunday, May 2, 2010, at Huron Regional Medical Center.
His memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 6, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
Burial of his cremated remains will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday MDT, May 7, at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis.
The family will be present at the funeral home to greet friends Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. The family may be reached at the home of his daughter, Joan and Keith DeShazer, 615 Nicollett Ave. SW, Huron.
Francis B. Lorenz, son of Bernard and Amanda (Stange) Lorenz, was born on September 27, 1924, in Gem Township, rural Groton. SD. He graduated from Groton High School and attended Northern University in Aberdeen.
On March 29, 1946, he entered the U.S. Coast Guard following World War II, and was honorably discharged as a YN2 (Yeoman) on March 28, 1949.
He returned home and worked for Amoco Company as a salesman in Huron, Watertown, Newell, Spearfish, and Pierre. He returned to Huron in 1964 and worked as a State Farm Insurance Agent until his retirement in 1988.
While residing in Huron he became a Charter Scoutmaster of Troop 222 and one of its advisors for the Order of the Arrow - Pheasant Council; President of the Huron Mens Bowling Association; and President of the Huron Life Underwriters.
Over the years he served in the veterans offices of Commander of American Legion William Reaves Post #7 of Huron for two separate years; Post Adjutant and on the Board of Directors for many years; Beadle County Commander; District 5 Commander; State Vice Commander; State Executive Committee member; Chef de Gare of Voiture #530 of the 40 et 8; State Child Welfare Directeur; Grande Chef de Gare; and Cheminot Nationale.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Huron; 4 children, David (Jeannie) Lorenz of Huron, James (Joann) Lorenz of Aberdeen, Robert (Nancy) Lorenz of Parkston, and Joan Ka (Keith) DeShazer of Huron; 7 grandchildren, Stephanie Lorenz, Maggie Lorenz, Ashley (Shaun) Lorenz-Sarvis, Zachary DeShazer, Bart Lorenz, Bobbi (Keith) Burgess, and Logan DeShazer; 3 great grandchildren, Samuel Lorenz, Owen Hawkins, and Emerson Sarvis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and 1 brother, T.C. Lorenz.
