Obituary

Faye Sweet, age 101, of Iroquois, SD, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

Her funeral Service will be 10:00 AM Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the Trinity United Methodist church in Iroquois, SD, with burial at the Maplewood Cemetery in Iroquois.

Visitation, with the family present, will be from 6-7 PM on Friday, February 1, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with a prayer service to begin at 7:00 PM; or visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Faye Lind was born on a farm southeast of Cavour, SD in Richland Township on August 8, 1917 to Saunders E. and Bertha Pearl (Etter) Lind.

She rode her horse, Nancy, to Richland Country School #1. When Nancy reached the wooden bridge at the creek she would stop and not go over the bridge so Faye had to walk the remaining ¾ of a mile to school. While walking to school she walked past Richland Methodist Church, where her family, including her brother Joy Alexander Lind and her sister Ruth Josephine Lind all attended on a regular basis on Sunday afternoons along with their cousins, the Beall sisters.  A cross erected by Maynard Sweet and Ernie Glanzer in 1978 marks the site of the former church which stood from 1911-1953.

After graduating 8 th grade from Richland #1 Faye graduated from Cavour High School in 1935 and John Fletcher College in Oskaloosa, IA in 1939 with degrees in math, business and English. Following her graduation from college, she taught high school in Ft. Dodge, IA, Grafton, IA and Wall Lake, IA.

Faye married Maynard E. Sweet when they eloped to Ft. Dodge, IA on December 30, 1942. She returned to Belle Prairie Township, Beadle County, SD where Faye taught high school at Cavour, SD, and was later a substitute teacher in Bancroft and Iroquois. Maynard farmed and taught country school in Belle Prairie Township.

In 1948 the family of Faye, Maynard and John moved off the farm to Iroquois where daughter Susan was born. The move to Iroquois was prompted by Maynard wanting John to attend school in town and also Maynard wanted a telephone.

Faye served on the Iroquois School District School Board and served as president. When school district reorganization occurred she became the school business manager and served in that position for 23 years. In 1981 Faye was awarded the Outstanding Business Manager Award for the state by the Associated School Boards of South Dakota.

Trinity United Methodist Church in Iroquois was the church home for the Sweet Family for over 70 years. During this time Faye prepared the Sunday bulletins and monthly newsletter. She served on many church committees and was the church treasurer and parish secretary for many years. She led Sunday school classes for many different age groups, and until recently the adult Sunday school class. Faye was a dedicated booster for her family, her church and her community.

Faye is survived by her children, John M. (Barb) Sweet of Port Ludlow, WA, and Susan A. (Roger) Burnett of Lakewood, CO.  Her five grandchildren are Amy (Greg) Asiala, Rebecca (Andrew) Jewell, Paul (Kristy) Burnett, Kimberly (Jason) Rubenstein, and Pamela (Michael) Redlinger. She has ten great-grandchildren, a sister, Ruth Kunzweiler of Fulda, MN, and ten nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Saunders and Pearl Lind, her husband, Maynard, a brother, Joy A. Lind, and a brother-in-law, Delbert Sweet.
