Farrell B. Johnson, age 98, of Huron, died Thursday, June 16th at his residence at SunQuest Village.
His funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 23 at Welter Funeral Home followed by military honors by the Huron Veteran's Council. Entombment will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery Mausoleum.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Farrell was born on July 15, 1917 in rural Deuel County near Altamont, SD; the only son of J. Edward and Anna (Well-Fulton) Johnson. In late 1920, he moved with his parents and half-sister (Sybil Fulton) to rural Ashland County, near the village of Morse, WI. Farrell graduated from high school in Mellen, WI in 1935.
He started working toward his college degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison but put his education on hold when he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served for 4 years during WWII. He served as a weather observer and forecaster advising military pilots in the United States and Brazil as they ferried troops back from Europe following VE Day.
After his honorable discharge from the Army Air Corps, Farrell went back to Madison, WI and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture and a minor in meteorology. Following graduation, Farrell was employed by the U.S. Weather Bureau, serving in Madison, WI, Washington National Airport, Huron, and Fargo, ND. He retired from the National Weather Service in 1976 at Fargo after 30 years of federal service.
Farrell enjoyed fishing, weather observing, travel, reading, watching TV, sports, and visiting relatives and friends. He was a member of several organizations which included NARFE, AARP, Sons of Norway, Lions International, American Legion, VFW, AAA, National Geographic Society, Huron Senior Center, and several alumni associations with the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Farrell retired to Huron and was a resident of SunQuest Village where he met and married Ann Duba Wren on November 17, 1997.
He is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Anna on September 29, 2015; his half-sister; brother-in-law; a niece; and a nephew.
