Evelyn L. "Aunt Evie" May, age 99, of Huron, and formerly of rural Huron, SD passed away on Monday, January 16, 2017 at her residence.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial visitation to celebrate Evelyn's Life will be held on Friday, January 20, 2017, from 5pm - 7pm at Welter Funeral Home in Huron.
Evelyn was born on February 15, 1917 in rural Huron to James W. and Edna M. (Fenn) May. She grew up on a farm north of Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1935. Evelyn held a few different jobs including working at the Beadle County Register of Deeds office and KIJV radio, but it wasn't until she started working for Charles Steuerwald, who owned the State Theater at the time, that she knew that's where she belonged. Little did Evelyn know that her job would turn into a 39 year career. A career that continued through different owners, operation changes and many, many different high school coworkers until she put the last film reel away on January 23, 1998 when she retired.
Aunt Evie never had children of her own but she had close relationships with all her high school coworkers over the years. She referred to them as "her kids" and they meant the world to her. Aunt Evie's "kids" all went together one year and purchased personalized license plates that said "Aunt Evie" for her. She renewed them every year that she was able to still drive. Many of "her kids" stayed in contact with Aunt Evie for years after they no longer worked at the theatre and were adults with their own families. Some of them chose to go into the theatre business as adults.
Evelyn enjoyed crocheting and knitting and enjoyed giving away many of her afghans and other creations to family and friends. She also knitted baby hats for premature babies that she donated to Huron Regional Medical Center. Her artistic creativity also carried over to ceramics where she garnered many awards at the State Fair which included the Governor's Award and also was a 3 time "Peggy Award" winner for her ceramics work. She was an accomplished baker and candy maker who was known for her tasty pies, cookies, and candy. During the spring and summer months, Evelyn enjoyed spending time tending to her vegetable and flower gardens.
She is survived by her niece, Penny Fisher of Huron; two great nieces, Kelly Halperin of Huron and Tracy Halperin of De Smet; and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Fern May Miller
