Obituary

Evelyn Bartells, age 81, of 705 Nevada Ave. SW, Huron, SD died on Sunday, November 16, 2008, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

Her funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 21, 2008 at the First Baptist Church with burial at Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 1-8 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 6-8 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7 p.m.; or Friday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.

Evelyn Bartells was born Evelyn Maxine Cowie on March 14, 1927, to William H. and Ella Pearl (Tredway) Cowie at Huron, SD.  She attended grade school at the Rand, Jefferson and South 22nd St schools.  The family moved to rural Wolsey in 1939 where she finished grade school at the Weeks School.  She attended Wolsey High School until March, 1944 when the family moved to Huron.  In 1945, she graduated from Huron High School.

Following graduation she was employed by J.J. Newberry, Western Adjustment Claim Office, and Standard Oil.  On May 15, 1949, she was united in marriage to Earl A.  Bartells at Huron.  They have spent their entire married life in Huron.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Sunshine Sunday School class and has held various offices in the church.  She was Key Woman for the church to church Women United.  She was a longtime member of the Fair City Garden Club and later the Heartland Garden Club. She loved to work in her garden, crochet afghans for her granddaughters and nieces and volunteer at the nursing home with Tri Chem painting.

She is survived by her husband Earl of Huron; two sons, Everett  (Joni) Bartells and Lynn (Julie) Bartells both of Wolsey; five grandchildren, Greg (Jen) Strub, Chad, Hallie, and Cody Bartells and Kristine (Brett) Larsen; two great granddaughters, Jaylin and Carlee Strub; two sisters, Lois (Orrin T.) Madson of Redwood Falls, MN and Clara Frank, of Wolsey, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a half-sister, two half brothers, and a brother in law, Clarence Frank and several nieces and nephews.
