Evelyn Bacon, age 83, of Huron, SD, died Sunday, April 24, 2011, at SunQuest Healthcare Center. Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Welter Funeral Home with burial at Doland Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 5-8; or Friday morning one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Evelyn Bacon was born Evelyn Pauline Hamilton, daughter of James and Pauline (Meyer) Hamilton, on August 18, 1927, in Doland, SD. She attended school in Doland through the 8th grade. At the age of 16 she moved with her family to Yale, SD. Evelyn lived in Yale until 1960 when she moved to Huron; in 1969 she moved to Canton, SD; in 1982 Evelyn moved to Huron and has lived here since that time. Evelyn was married to Guy Gilbert, Sr., and to this union was born 5 children: Mary, Greg, Guy "Junior", Gene, and Gloria. Evelyn was married to George Link and to this union was born daughter, Minnie. During her earlier years in Huron she worked at the café near the state fairgrounds; worked as a nurses aide at St. John's Hospital; was a mother and homemaker; and worked as a housekeeper in her later years. Evelyn was a foster mother to many children and took them in no matter their age. She made many afghans over the years for everyone that she knew. Evelyn was always willing to help someone in their time of need. She is survived by 3 children, Mary (David Cunningham) Gilbert of Huron; Greg Gilbert of Wyoming; and Minnie (Eric) Lofboom of Princeton, MN; 3 grandchildren, Amy (Dave) Greenslade of Wyoming, Barbara Gilbert of Wyoming, and Raymond Reagan of Zimmerman, MN; and 1 great grandchild. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; 2 sons, Guy "Junior" Gilbert, Jr., and Gene Gilbert; daughter, Gloria Gilbert; brother, Robert Hamilton; sisters, Margerie Rham, and Bonnie Bartel; and 2 granddaughters, Amy McKenzie, and Rachel Gilbert; 1 grandson, Gene Gilbert, Jr.; and 3 step children.
