Obituary

Eunice Alter, age 87, of Huron, SD, died on Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.

Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 26, at American Lutheran Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m.; or Tuesday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.

Eunice Alter was born Eunice Marie Pronk, daughter of Jacob and Theresa Tressie (Miller) Pronk, on February 20, 1922, in Clear Lake, SD. As a small child, she moved with her family to Huron where she grew up, attended schools, and graduated from Huron High School in 1940.

On September 23, 1945, Eunice married Harlan Alter in Huron. They lived all of their married life in Huron where Eunice was a homemaker and babysat for various children.

Eunice was a member of American Lutheran Church and Deborah Circle; DAV Auxiliary; and Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776 Auxiliary. Her family was paramount in her life and she especially enjoyed the time that she could spend with her grandchildren. Her interests included embroidery, word puzzles, reading, canning, cooking and her coffee group which met at the homes of its members.

She is survived by her 2 sons, Larry (Carol) Alter of Findlay, OH, and Howard (Cindy) Alter of Huron, SD; 3 daughters, Janice (John) Artz of Pierre, SD, Jean (Lloyd Timperley) Pastian of Huron, and Donna Alter of Huron; 4 grandchildren, Cathy (Mike) Maunu, Aymee (Greg) Flores, Justin (Holly) Artz, and Crystal (Matt Dooley) Alter; 2 step grandchildren, Brenda Phillips, and Holly (Julian) Rios; 12 great grandchildren, Jessica King, Austin Maunu, Alex Maunu, Mathew Flores, Diontay Phillips, Jaylaca Phillips, Jabier Rios, Chawnsey Phillips, Giovanni Rios, Kadden Voigt, Lakken Voigt, and Baby Dooley; 1 sister-in-law, Lula Mae Pronk of Huron and many nieces and nephews.

Eunice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harlan October 31, 1997; 4 siblings in infancy, Shirley Pronk, Lola Pronk, Marvin Pronk and Baby Boy Pronk; her brother, Milton Pronk; 2 sisters and their spouses, Velma Paulson and husband George, and LaVon Moen and husband Arvin.
