Obituary

Eugene Anderson, age 89, of Hitchcock, SD, died Saturday January 30, 2010, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron.

His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron with burial at Altoona Cemetery in Hitchcock including Military Rites by Raymond-Hart American Legion Post #84 of Hitchcock.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Welter Funeral Home with a scripture service at 7:00 p.m., or one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Eugene Albert Anderson was born June 20, 1920, near Hitchcock, SD, to Iver and Vera (Voorhees) Anderson. He graduated from Hitchcock High School in 1938. Eugene attended Huron College for 2 years; but after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he joined the United States Navy. Eugene reported to San Diego Naval Base in March 1942 and received his commission as a Supply Officer. While in California, he attended the University of California Berkeley for two semesters. In January, 1942, he attended Harvard School of Business for training as an Electronic Supply Officer. Eugene was discharged from the Navy in 1946 from Great Lakes,IL, and subsequently returned to South Dakota to farm on the family homestead with his father.

Eugene married Genevieve Cramer on November 9, 1949, in Mitchell. After they were married, they moved to Rapid City where Eugene worked as a haberdasher for eight years before returning once again to the family farm. Eugene occasionally worked at Hedblooms in Huron during the winter. He farmed with his son until 2005 on the family farm that has been in the Anderson family for over 127 years.

Eugene enjoyed raising quarter horses, especially Palominos. He rode as a cowboy and for pleasure in parades and on trail rides, until the age of 83. Eugene enjoyed watching his grandchildren compete in basketball and 4-H. Eugene also raised Hereford cattle, corn, soybeans, sunflowers, and wheat. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Raymond-Hart American Legion Post 2186 of Hitchcock.

Eugene is survived by his sons, Richard (Lisa) Anderson of Eden Prairie, MN, and Martin (Carol) Anderson of Hitchcock; 6 grandchildren, Tara, Marissa, John (Meghan), Nicole, Kristi (fianc Wayne Smith), and Laura Anderson; brother, Eldon Anderson of Hitchcock; sister in law, Francis McDougal of Mitchell.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Genevieve in October 1995; sister, Alieda Boomsma.
