Eudale
Nielsen
June 8, 1931 – May 19, 2026
Eudale Cornelius “Corny” Nielsen, age 94, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 at Avantara in Huron. His Memorial Service will be at 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at Welter Funeral Home with military honors by the Woonsocket Legion Post 29. Visitation, with his family present, will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26 at the funeral home.
Eudale was born in Alpena, South Dakota, on June 8, 1931, to Alfred and Agnes (Cornelius) Nielsen. Because he was born around midnight, there was always some uncertainty as to whether his birth date was June 7 or June 8—a detail that became a favorite family story and even caused some confusion during his military service.
He grew up on the family farm near Forestburg, South Dakota, where he learned the values of hard work, humility, and perseverance that guided him throughout his life. As a boy, he rode his pony to the local country school, beginning a lifelong love of farming and rural life.
Eudale proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home to the life he loved most—farming.
On August 2, 1961, Eudale married the love of his life, Helen Marie Yotter, in Pipestone, Minnesota. They honeymooned at beautiful Lake Okoboji, beginning a marriage that would span nearly 65 years. Together they began their married life on the family farm, where they raised their three daughters, Lori, Paula, and Amy. The farm was the center of their family life for more than four decades. Eudale farmed his entire life and retired in 2005 at the age of 74. He and Helen then moved into Woonsocket in 2005 and later to Huron in 2007, where they made their home for the remainder of his life.
Farming was far more than Eudale’s occupation—it was his passion. He spent countless hours in the seat of an open-air tractor, tending the land he cherished. He was a proud member of the National Farmers Organization (NFO) and remained deeply interested in agriculture throughout his life.
Eudale had a keen and curious mind. He enjoyed reading the Farmers’ Almanac, encyclopedias, and nearly anything else he could get his hands on. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, his words were thoughtful, measured, and wise. He reflected carefully before offering his opinion and was known as a true gentleman who never had a bad word to say about anyone.
Above all else, Eudale treasured his family. Nothing brought him greater joy than time spent with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. His whole face would light up, and the sparkle in his eyes was unmistakable whenever they came to visit. He was an extraordinary role model—a thoughtful, generous, and loving man whose quiet strength and kind heart made everyone around him better.
Eudale is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 65 years, Helen Nielsen of Huron SD; his daughters, Lori Dorris of Huron SD, Paula (Chad) Deckert of Mitchell SD, and Amy Fenner of Huron SD; along with his cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Agnes Nielsen; his sisters, Faith Fox, Bonnie Nielsen, and Madonna Kentro; and his son-in-law, Douglas Fenner.
Eudale will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, proud farmer, veteran, and true gentleman. His steady wisdom, gentle spirit, and unwavering love for his family will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
